Root Rot and Light Leaks

I'm in a debate of sorts with someone regarding light leaks and root rot. I peronally have experienced root rot, and the only thing I did different was, that I was too lazy to paint the container prior to placing it in the flowering room. It was a white container (not clear) and root rot just thrived in there. There is plenty of air, but the root rot still took. I guess my question is, "is root rot also caused by light leaks"? And what are the disadvantages of letting light get into your container.

Hey Smoke....

root rot is often caused by lack of adequate oxygen.. this can be caused by HIGH/LOW temperatures, over crowdiing, stagnant water, and ALGAE..

when lights gets into the reservoir it is likely to grow algae.. the algae will consume the OXYGEN in the water and that will/CAN lead to root rot...

It is NEVER good to let light hit your resevoir water nor soil.. some people have used clear containers for soil grows.. the soil then gets real slimy and there is a good chance the roots will ROT....

would changing the res about once a week stop algae therefore preventing the lack of o2 therefore preventing root rot?

So light leaks lead to problems that lead to other problems, that lead to root rot?

I tell ya I blast my plants with oxygen, and this still happened. It was just one plant, more of my laziness than anything. Appreciate it GK

If you want to prevent root rot the best thing is Hygrozyme. It much better than any other enzyme product on the market and is much cheaper than using Hydrogen Peroxide. It can prevent and even cure root rot quickly and easily. But if light is hitting your roots it is causing damage to the roots that allows anaerobic bacteria to flourish on the dead tissue and to eventually contaminate the entire res. People who say light is not harmful to roots don't know their plant physiology, it is never good for roots and will always cause problems.

I have hygrozyme and used it...not alot though, and as far as it being cheaper than hydrogen peroxide, i fail to understand this. Hygrozyme was almost $30 a bottle.
