Root Growth HELP PLEASE

My space is somewhat limited, i plan on using cfl's for veg and a t5 for flowering. my question is can roots grow sideways instead of growing down? here's my illustrations. I'm sorry if this question is completely stupid, but is this possible, without increasing the chances of a Hermie?

i recall reading somewhere that it will decrease the height of the main branch and let the other branches develop more.
you could just use a small space for roots and thus limiting the plant size.
I use coffee cardboard cups in my PC grow and it keeps it right at the size i want it.

i have some tiny plants, and some 1.3 meter plants.
I've flowered a male a month ago which i didn't want to get too big so i've figured up the cup thing.
I'm going to keep mothers, and I want them really small too because they will be kept in a PC. (4 mothers that I have now and 6 other mothers I plan on holding)
