Rockwool Newb Q

Experiencing my first run with rockwool cubes, 4", in an ebb and flow system. The cubes just sit in the open tray w/o a lid, exposed to ambient air. I thought at some point, especially sometime mid bloom, I would have seen roots growing from the bottom of the cube out onto the tray. I kinda imagined a whole mass of roots outstretched on the bottom of the tray. I even made a little make shift cover for the tray out of some black plastic sheeting to give the future roots some darkness and a moister environment. Six weeks into flower the cubes look exactly the same, well with a little more algae I suppose, but no roots taking advantage of all that tray space.

The same goes for a couple of plants I've had vegging for over two months in a similar ebb and flow setup. I guess the roots just don't want to leave their home. The bottom of the cubes are filled with roots, though not as healthy as roots I'm accustomed to seeing with the flood technique of a tray w/ a lid and baskets with hydroton rock. When I grew with that setup roots would amass outside of the basket and grow down onto the bottom of the tray. Not so with rockwool I'm observing...unless I'm doing something wrong, over watering perhaps?

They get fed three times a day for 15min. Guy at the hydro store said to water up to six times a day to keep oxygen and nutrients pumping through. Though I thought the whole thing with rockwool was its superior air to water ratio, not needing to be watered as much and still allowed for plenty of oxygen exchange.

I guess I'm looking for feedback from experienced rockwool users as it pertains to watering cycle and root development. If the roots are just going to stay contained within the cube in my current ebb and flow setup I may look to change things. I believe the bigger the root system the better the plant.

Although, there is the possibility of incorporating larger cubes and maybe even those rockwool slabs for the roots to grow down into. I know some people like to use hyrdoton but I'm sick of that shit...no more for me. I'd rather go aero.
But I'd like to work with this rockwool for a bit more, put a little xp under the belt. Any suggestions, comments or criticism are warmly welcomed. thanks for reading.

Giving myself a bump here and would really like some insight from experienced RW users. I'm thinking of turning my Ebb and Flow table to an NFT setup by just leaving the pump running continuously or a 15min on/off cycle and removing the water riser thing so that just an inch or so of water runs through the tray. Any objections?

You could try a coco mat, that'll help your roots run. I'm guessing air pruning. Mine did a fine job coming out the bottom of the cubes into hydroton that was around them in pots.

I don't really get what you're saying here...maybe you could elaborate.

With RW you want to water ever 3 hours or so for 10-15min per watering. The more you water the more nutes they eat and the bigger they get. Yes RW breathes well.

Watering just once a day does not take advantage of the RW...

My 4" cubes started popping roots out of the bottom by week two. This is with a fast growing sativa hybrid. My guess is that if you put a coco mat like Someguy said, or a RW slab, the roots will grow into it. Why are they not growing in the tray? Cause your RW is a better home for them. I would give them more medium to grow into.

My buddy just grew 12 plants in the 6" cubes...no slabs. He hit 2.25lbs. He did have some roots in his tray.

Ok. What you're saying jives with what the guy at the Hydro store said, watering 3 up to 4 times per 12hr light cycle for the girls in bloom. Apparently some strains I have have more abundant root growth underneath the RW than others. Underneath most lots of brown, older roots can be seen kinda smashed along the bottom. My OG Kush on the other hand has actually got a very vibrant set of healthy white roots dangling from the bottom when I pick it up. They are even starting to grow from underneath out into the tray. This is the result I want from all my plants.

One train of thought was that if I watered less it would induce more root growth, as the plant searches for more water. The other thought, more congruent with NFT, would just be to let the RW get watered every 15 minutes with the water only going up to about an inch within the tray (simulating NFT). I can't completely flood to the top of the RW cubes b/c they float and tip over ( this started when the girls got a little top heavy). I'll keep experimenting with the watering regimen and see what works best. I'll definitely try experimenting with the coco mat or RW slaps to give the roots something to grow down into as well.

I think I kinda ramble on these posts but I'm pretty sure you get my drift. Essentially I want to maximize the efficiency of the RW medium to get the best buds I can get. Again, thanks for comments and help. :-P :weed:
