Rockwool Ebb and Flow 2022

Tolerance Break

Well-Known Member
This is my first grow journal, for my second home grow, and I'm looking forward talking shit and getting shit the whole way through.

Introduction

I am in the process of getting clones to root for my 2022 grow journal. I am still an amateur at growing at home, however I am not a novice with this style of grow. This post exists to get some feedback on what Ill be doing, and to help remove some of the rust.

Pineapple fields from Dynasty Genetics is the strain. Operating with the presumption my clones have a 100% success rate. I'll take be putting 12 to 16 of them to flower in a 3x3 ID flood tray, inside of a 4x4 gorilla grow tent. I will be using 2 GLS 300 lights, Jacks 321 nutes, RO water, pool shock or UC Roots as my means of maintaining res sterility, rockwool as my substrate, a 27 gal res, with flood and drain as my method of hydro. The tray will be lined with cotton batting for root structure, and will be covered with panda film to keep the root zone dark and humid.

My air circulation will be controlled by a model 67 AC infinity controller. The intake will be a 4" infinity cloudline, with a 6" cloudline exaust. I will have 2 tower fans hanging horizontally, one above the cannopy, and one below, keeping the air moving. The lower fan might end up getting eliminated. There will be a dehumidifier in the lung room, along with a hepa air filter, and a window ac unit for temp control.

Ideally, my daytime temp will range from 75 at the beginning of flower, all the way to 84 at its peak, with an RH between 45 and 60, and a day night temp Flux of 10 to 15 degrees.

Here's where I am struggling.

The concept of VPD is difficult for me to wrap my head around, but I understand its importance. Then there's EC and feed schedule... My last crop was wind, light, and nute burnt, but I got a very decent yield running the Jacks reccomended EC for most of my flower. I started at 2.3, which was a high, dropped it to 1.5 at 6 weeks, then worked my way down to .8 before chop. I watered once a day during lights on the first 2 weeks, 2 weeks of twice a day, and then three times a day the rest of the grow (once an hour before lights on, mid day, then an hour before lights off), with PH'd RO flushes every week, along with the res change.

I plan on listening to my plant this time around and narrowing down my margin for error but the more I read, the more conflicted I become with my nute concentration and schedule.

Drop any knowledge or questions below. I am here to learn discuss, and perhaps educate since rockwool cube grows seem to be less popular these days.

Thanks for your time and input - TB

To clarify, you are running a sog in rockwool blocks. I'm intrigued by the cotton batting. This will fill the tray entirely around the blocks? Wouldn't rockwool croutons serve as well? Or is that a cost choice? Curious.

Agreed, the cotton batting is unnecessary, a 6" cube is plenty big for that plant density.
I should clarify, the cubes are 4x4, and the batting is a thin sheet of cotton covering the bottom of the tray. In my last grow I used coco matts with great success. I wanted to try batting because its cheaper, thinner, and holds less water.

Here are some photos. I know I have better photos of the coco matt and how big the roots got, but I have to do some digging.20210830_122347.jpg

Brief update.

I done fucking goofed.

100% failure rate on clones. Pretty sure I used too much hormone and changed my variables too much, too often. Impatience is a mother fucker.

I've got some more pineapple fields vegging out, but for now, here's my only plant in flower. Gorilla Peyote, week 5ish?

I will revive this journal soon as long as I don't fuck up again. Peace. -TB

Are these grown out of cotton batting or coco mats?

This plant is in a 4x4 Rockwool cube sitting on a Coco mat, the failed clones were in Rockwood starting cubes.

Haven't broken into the cotton batting. I planned on the Gorilla Peyote being a mother, so it was already on a coco mat I had left over from my previous grow, so I added more coco mat and called it good.

Here's some roots from a few days ago

How often are you watering?

How often are you watering?
This week I started 3 feedings a day, 4 minutes a piece. I stacked the small coco mat the cube was on a larger mat, and the tray is massive. It takes 3 minutes and 30 seconds for the water to get about an eighth of an inch up the rockwool cube.

First feeding an hour after lights on, second feeding mid day, final feeding an hour before lights off. Prior to this week, I was just feeding in the morning and before lights out.
