Hope someone gives you a good answer. I've been looking into getting one for myself to install on my slop sink in basement next to my tent. I also have really hard water, my well isn't that great and my ppm is always over 500 at the tap. Right now I'm using rain water and distilled if I run out of rain water with cal/mag added to it. Not really good at plumbing either but sure I could figure it out if I took the time to read on install plus YouTube videos Home Depot etc. those attachments for the sink head ur talking about is prob one of those brita type things.

Go to home depot and get one of those garden hose fittings, the Y fitting that has 2 outputs with little valves in them. Hook this up to something like your cold water feed to your washing machine. The Y lets you run one hose to wachine machine, or whatever, and the other to your RO system. The fitting on the RO system should screw right onto the Y fitting.

Until you get a regulator you'll have to manually control the inlet pressure with the valve on the fitting. They usually like around 60-80psi. Also, invest in a float valve for a shut-off as well. I overflowed my trash cans several times before getting the float valves. Saves the headaches.

Hmm thinking on how to word this answer.........................Ok, here we go...

Iron in water is basically in 3 forms....Ferrous,,,Ferric and Bacterial... For our problems, lets forget about bacterial as that has little to no effect to your problem.

If your water comes out clear and turns red or brown as it sits. That's Ferrous iron and is easy to control by common filtration.

If your water comes out Yellow to brown or reddish brown. That's Ferric iron (also called organic iron) and is HARD to remove or control by any means other then filtering through Boron or Greensand filters AND/OR an RO system!

It sounds like you have FERRIC iron! A simple multi stage carbon filter will not do much for this...You MUST run an RO....

The majority of RO systems will be easy to install with proper instructions supplied by the maker. It sounds like you'll need plenty more then 1-2 gallons of RO a day, so you'll need to get a high pressure "booster pump" for the system....
You can save over 65% on buying the RO booster pump on Ebay over buying one at the local grow shop! Search "RO BOOSTER PUMP" . Get one with an automatic shut off switch.....I prefer the float switch option, that you put on your holding tank...

Keep in mind that you will now have to change the RO membrane like every 6 months instead of every year! About 50 bucks a pop and that's a cheap solution as Greensand and Boron filter tanks will run you about $ 350 and up to just replace the Boron or Green sand, not to mention buying it in the first place.

Dirty is correct on the "Y" fitting !

Depending on where you live (house vs apartment) the washing machine lines are the best place to start the project......I run constant air in my holding tank to reduce bacterial growth.....

In the long run it is actually simple to complete the hook up...

Good Luck

Pure Water Products has excellent customer service, just purchased a counter top RO unit, broke a minor piece on installation and requested a replacement part. They responded the next business day, saying they would send replacement parts via first class mail, on them.

Easiest thing to do....If your faucet has a screen fitting that unscrews where the water comes out, most of them do...take it to Home Depot and find the correct size garden hose adaptor to match the threads on your screen. Most ro systems have a garden hose thread, so you can simply screw it into your faucet when you need to make water. Put your water collection bottle in the sink in case it overflows and run the wastewater line down the drain. After a few fills you will have a good idea how long it will take, then you won't need any extra equipment.

Non RO filters will not remove the iron properly - period.....

http://www.thefilterguys.biz/ro_di_systems.htm OCEAN WAVE FIVE STAGE 75 GPD RO/DI
thats the one i was looking at and the little attchtments come with for a lil extra money seems good obvi i have no idea anyone have any input on this pump?
These are Aquarium RO units....The DI part is a way to prefilter for iron.....It won't last long for your iron problem, nor do you need all this crap.....You need something more simple. All you really need is a three stage..
Remember that the more "filters" you have - the more it costs to replace them!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Home-Drinking-USA-Reverse-Osmosis-RO-System-Garden-Laundry-Garage-Hose-connect-/262042488150?var=&hash=item3d02f30d56

Read this carefully.....The amounts of water that they CLAIM the unit delivers is contingent on there being high enough water pressure. 65 psi is the pressure they are metering from.....If you have water from a WELL ..... You have only 40 -45 psi and WILL NEED a pressure booster to get the amount of water you need to water with daily.....Even if you water every other or every 3 days, you SHOULD use a pressure booster....

Pressure booster

This beyond simple to install! Easy to read instructions with pictures.....You get these parts and you can have the whole system running in 30 min or LESS!

You will need a plastic 30 or 55 gallon drum and a float valve and that's it!

float valve

http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/110913125035?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82

All you do is get that "Y" valve from Home depot or any big box store and you connect that to the Cold water line that the washing machine connects to.....I'll bet there is space next to it for the 30 or 55 gallon drum for the holding tank! I bet you only need the 300 gallon....

Stop fretting and start ordering the stuff I linked you too.

Doc

You don't want any RO that simply screws onto your faucet.....WAY to slow...

See Yah!
