So I fucked up the other day, I made some baked goods in a pyrex pan, and set it on a COLD burner to cool... Then I put some water on the back burner to boil, but I actually turned the front burner to boil, the burner with the pyrex dish.

Anyway, I noticed that my dish started to produce smoke and I instantly realized my mistake, so I promptly turned the burner off, picked up the dish with an oven mit and BOOOOOOOOM! It fucking EXPLODED into a million pieces. Like I've NEVER in my life seen anything shatter into so many pieces, so far away. I found glass a good 15 feet from where it exploded.

I was picking glass out of my stomach and leg with tweezers :wall:

SO, word of caution. Be SUPER careful with pyrex cookware.. especially around heat. I just did a quick google online and found similar things that have happened to people who tried to use pyrex cookware for oven roasting.

.... I just wanted to put this out there, just because there is a chance of ONE person reading this and avoiding my mistake. I'm extremely lucky the dish wasn't at eye level when it exploded or I would be pulling glass from my eyes.

Holy shit man, hope you're ok. I would have stood there in mystery for a few minutes after the dish exploded to realise what had happened

i thought the whole point of pyrex was that it was supposed to have some kind of fancy thermo properties. that's fucked up but i'm not surprised. i don't think any glass or glass-like material should be exposed to open flame. once when i was a kid i put about 6 of those cone incense things in a glass ashtray and after 10 minutes the ashtray shattered in a scene similar to the one described in the first post. i did think pyrex was different though. note to self i guess.

I've had that happen to me as well, but luckily i wasn't hurt. I was baking in the oven and when i turned off the oven because it was finished, it exploded with the door open. It was truely frightening when i saw glass flying across the room unexpectedly.

Had one sitting on the counter top completely cooled down. Didn't realise the sun rays coming through the window. Heated the glass and while I was at the sink it exploded just like you explained. Crazy shit for sure.

First off, HOLY shit. This is ridiculous how many people this has happened to. 4 of 10 people that replied had a pyrex dish explode on them. 40%.

How have I never heard of this happening, but so many have also experienced it.

Man I'm so baked. bongsmilie

I read a quick little shindig, and supposedly they stopped making 'true' prex trays (from borosillicate glass i think which is great high end bongs use that glass). They started making them in china with cheaper materials, and supposedly the result is a shitty dish that fucking explodes. Now I googled that, and found it to be half true/half false on snopes.. And snopes is gay, and wont let me copy their text so I'm not even going to look it up im too baked

Yeah right? The thing is, I was barefoot. And the tray exploded in my hands, so glass was ALL over the floor around my feet, and on top of my feet... at first I stood there in shock but I knew not to move and be still because not like you can jump out of the way of exploding glass  It took me a few minutes to be able to move my feet without cutting them up

Had a Pyrex pan explode, left it sitting on a pair of oven mitts that were sitting on a chair in front of the stove, as I loaded the next pan in the stove and closed the door I walked away to wash my hands.

10 seconds later the cooling Pyrex exploded and shot a piece through the glass door on the oven. Sucked, those oven doors aren't cheap.
Havent used Pyrex shit since.

what the fuck man pyrex should change there name to glass grenades or something,
slogan could be
it the only cook ware that when you cook with it, it blows the fuck up haha
or
heat the oven to 400 hundred and run

Even though pyrex can handle high temperatures, it can not handle a large flux of heat unevenly applied, one part of the glass then expands, (or if cooled down too fast, shrinks) faster than the other parts.
Intersting thing about glass is, it does not have a crystaline structure, the molecules kinda float around like those found in other liquids.

Crystal

Glass

Check how the glass wobbles in response to sound... turn down your speakers though, its a pretty annoying tone around 500Hz.

i dont know why u guys need to put it on the stove i would get a hot water bottle and place the pyrex on top of that OUTSIDE no more explosions
