I started with soil and cfl's- about $30 or so for lighting and used fairly cheap soil and 5 gal buckets. I started 4 plants and finished 2 with a fairly small quantity of high quality buds. I never weigh the stuff but I was filling pint jars up before long.... I have since gone to 400W HPS that I got from a site called inside sun for only about $120. It is has a remote ballast and a simple reflective hood. Now I have 4 females going for their big money shot- 1 month left to go. I just lucked out on the M/F thing. I think some of the seeds I started may have been feminized but that is just a guess.
I am going at about as cheaply as you can. It would be better if it wasn't so damn HOT outside. It's a small closet grow.
