Question on roots showing through the bottom holes of a planter pot

If a person has a plant that the roots are starting to come through the bottom holes of a 1/2 gallon plastic nursery planters pot, but don't seem to be all bunched up against the inner side walls of the pot. Is this root bound or normal? I told him he might want to transplant to a larger container.....would this be OK, or should he wait longer till it tightens up a little more inside the pot (side ways, not downward) ....? It's only three weeks old, still in veg stage and only four inches tall......?.......

Time to potup ...or suffer the plague of the AERO PRUNE !!!!! ( where roots dry out and drop off)

if he's planning to use a larger container, sounds like it's time to swap out. even in your final containers, you'll see roots coming out of the container bottom. so, don't fret about "so called," root-bound plants. as long as all nutritional/environmental needs are met, your plants will be fine....

Being rootbound can drastically reduce yields by preventing further root growth. Root mass is directly proportional to bud mass.

I would definitely repot into the final growing container.

I'd get it straight into a 3 gallon. Done right, it's not that stressful if the plant is healthy

I get it...makes sense... He was worried because light getting to her roots. It's weird, it's like ( I swear ) if the roots are growing by the hour - kind of creepy, but I guess it's a sign of good health. You would think that if the roots where so long that the plant would be taller then what it is. I'm sure it has a lot to do with its genetics being Indica. But It looks healthy so he's happy.

i totally agree. but, i don't think of it as root-bound. like i said, even in a larger container (i use 5 gal. myself) you will see roots coming out. i wouldn't consider that being r.b. (some may, i don't.) there will be a point when limiting root-mass will directly effect overall growth. what is it, one gallon of medium per foot of vert. growth? 5 gallons is plenty, for me anyway. my 1000 watt light ends up netting me nice 12" plus buds, for the most part. but anyways, if i had a smaller wattage light, i'd limit my container size. so if that's what root-bound is, then mine are every time i grow, lol....
