Question On Lighting- Veg To Flowering

So we're setting up our first room tonight
we have 12 seedlings that we've had under some flourescents for about 4 days now but we got 2 1000watt extended spectrum high sodium pressure bulbs so we dont have to switch the lights from the veg to flowering process. The problem is:
1) I'm not sure if they're too hot for the babies
2) I'm under the impression we need to keep light on them 24 hours for a while but I'm not sure how long
3) Then after the 24 hour period I hear 6 on 6 off is the best step or that 12/12 is better and I'm not sure which one is correct.

anyone with answers/ suggestions? thanks guys
:peace:

HPS are best for flowering, and that much light from to 1000 HPS would probably kill your seedlings. Keep the fluoros close, keep them on for 24/0 or 18/6 for right now. After about eight weeks to ten weeks the plants should reach maturity and you can put them to a 12/12 light cycle to make the start flowering.

thanks man. I thought the extended spectrum dealy meant i could use it for both though. you make sense, however.

2nd opinions? upping.

first off, veg at 18/6. 24 hours of light is overkill and a few hours of dark is good for root growth. 20/4 is fine too.
How many watts of fluorescents do you have? after about two weeks your fluoros may not be enough anymore. I agree that even one 1000 w HPS is overkill for even 12 plants during veg period, but too much light is better than not enough. Just make sure you keep that thing around 3 feet from the young plants, so as not to burn the shit out of them. As the plants get older (around 4 to 6 weeks) you can start to bring the 1000 w light closer. Always test the heat with your hand first...
If I were you, I would invest in an MH conversion bulb for one of your lights. Your plants will be more compact when vegging with MH and won't stretch.
Depending on how many watts of fluoros you have you might be able to veg with them the whole way.

Ohh, and you can start flowering after week 5 or 6 if you like. it won't do them any harm.

As a rule of thumb:
lumens per square foot:
veg 2000 - 3000
flower 8000 - 10000

You can veg with a HPS bulb but it won't give as good as yeilds if you had a MH bulb. You should let us know the demensions of your grow room and also the wattage of the flouro's if you want some help. Maybe just use one of your HPS bulbs for veg and once u put your plants on the 12/12 bring in the other one. Just an idea but if u got 2 MH bulbs and a big grow room together with ure 2 HPS bulbs u could have some huge yields. The best thing you can do is experiment and change things that didn't work as good as you wanted the first time.
