Question about outdoor lighting..

Hello.

This might seem like a stupid question but (if I put my plants outside, and throughout the day, a shadow comes over them... are they still receiving light??)

I mean.. it's not like they are in complete darkness!

Just because there is shade, does that mean they're receiving ZERO light?
