Let the leaves fall off on their own, otherwise you're stressing your plant and hindering its ability to photosynthesize.

how would you like it if someone ripped off your hands? the fan leaves are the sugar factories for teh plant. they are what gather light and help the plant grow.

If you have to trim leaves to let light through, go ahead and trim a couple. If you take off more than just a few you could shock the plant. If your late in flower and your leaves are changing colour leave them if they dont come off with a touch.. If you have to tug at it.... leave it. If your trying to cut off DEAD LEAVES in VEG, you have a bigger problem. Check your nutes and environment. Hope this helps

Cheers

i trim big fan leaves when they cover up buds, but only a couple here and there.and only in the first week of bud or so.some people say do it and some people say never do it,its up to you.

Pull the ones that are dying, damaged and so on... Other wise they are prone 2 disease, mold, pests, ect.

But new research is showing that touching your plants often will for surely lead to a smaller plant with smaller leaves and a smaller yield.
This is due to a hormone human skin puts off that dwarfs the plant...

I now wear gloves/longsleeve when doing major handling... Pruning, rotating, ect.

never take more than a third of a plant at a time. usually there's a ratio of leaves to a bud. i trim only canopy leaves that limit light and none other. i dont even take off bottom of plant i let them yellow and die away on own til they fall by touch. i do trim bottom 1/3 rd nodes away but leave all leafs i can.

Jberry - could you cite any sources/links to information on the hormone thing for me?
yea im acually gunna start a new thread of obscure/cutting edge research that ive came across, i'll post it later today or tomorrow.

but until then, here's the little info i have on that specific subject...

(taken from "canna talk no.6 special san francisco expo edition" article)

How plants communicate - By: D. Kroeze MSc.

"Plants do have a sense of touch. Researchers
discovered this when doing a test involving plant
hormones. It turned out that not only did the plants
that were given the hormone stay smaller, but so
did the plants that were given a substance that
was entirely inactive. The reason for staying small
appeared to lie in the plants being touched when
the substance was applied and not in the hormone
itself. So, plants stay smaller if touched. What has
this got to do with the influence on a plant
if it’s touched? In addition to being smaller the
plant goes on flowering longer. These reports tend
to concern plants that give flowers such as roses.
In addition to delayed flowering and staying small,
plants that are touched frequently have smaller
leaves, reduced photosynthesis and accelerated
aging. How it is that a plant’s development and
growth can be influenced by being touched is not
precisely known today, but if you touch your plants
often you can be sure of a smaller harvest.

canna is just so advanced when it comes to research, they really research everything. they have made several scientific discoveries that have been proven and accepted in the world of horticulture scientist, and they have been doing it for about 30 years!

most of my info in the post i spoke of will be taken from canna talk issues lol :)
interesting stuff though.
