I've found that starting in 32oz. styro cups and only xplanting once, into 5 or 7 gal containers, to be best for me. Using reg seeds, can sex before xplant and when xplanting just cut away the styro, easy peasy. For many years i used the store bought largest size, which was 16oz, just not big enough. Found that i could get any size cups in large quantity for cheap and delivered directly to my door, by internet shopping. 500 cups and under $30, will last me, my lifetime. I xplant into the 5gal homedepot type buckets, which actually hold 7 gal of soil, close to the top.
My routine for the 32oz styro cups is to poke 10 or so holes in the bottom with a toothpick and fold aluminum foil underneath as a catch tray for run off. When ready to xplant, razor cut down 2-3 sides and the cup falls away from roots, no damage.
