Possible to reduce power on a 1000 watt ballast?

I can get a 1000 watt ballast from a guy for pretty cheap, I only need maybe 400 watts though and I dont want to putt in a 400 watt bulb and risk melting something, so is it possible to maybe install a dimmer type of thing or somehow limit the wattage to make it 400 watt but make the light have full output? Taking it apart and wiring wouldnt be a problem as Im fine doing that its just I dont know if its possible.

No... Only if the ballast is digital and has a dimmer function built in (such as lumatek). Also 400 watt bulb in a 1000 watt ballast = bad news...same for dimmer attached to magnetic ballast...

Yeah thats what I figured, so really its only possible to run a 1000 w bulb on a 1000 w ballast?
