as per my grow journal, I just bought this 400w hps setup today (shop was actually closed, but the owner was there when I called so I went down and grabbed it). The amber-glass base is cracked and amber glass chips are rattling around on the inner bulb (ignitor?). Hard to tell from the pics, but the socket is oblonged, definately not round. When I screwed the bulb in it was lumpy and tight, but I went at it gingerly. Didn't hear any snaps crackles or pops. But to my dismay, when I plugged her in there was no light. The ballast made a hum/buzz noise. Bulb never came on. I'm pretty sure once the base is cracked like this it's toast right? Really sucky thing is he doesn't have anymore of these 400w setups so I'm gonna be waiting another week at least using these stupid 4' flourescent tubes. Grrrrr. I'm pretty freakin' choked here. Had my room all tore apart in anticipation of hanging the light only to find out that not only doesn't it work, but I can't even just string up the socket/ballast and get a new bulb tomorrow as the socket is probably the culprit for the bulb breaking. Nothing like shelling out $150 for nothing. Good thing I've got some skunky roaces kicking around and a half 2/6 of fireball.
