Police evidence question

So here's the situation,

My friend lives in the dorms, as do I. Over the past weekend the cops came into one of our neighbors rooms and they got busted. As the cops were making the kids dump out the beer (there was one officer down the hall way and one officerin the room with the rest of the kids who was in there) they set the owner's bong outside the door in the hallway. My friend and another kid who lives on the floor (we'll call him J) took the bong and hid it in J's room. J's roommate (we'll call him F) was in the room that got busted and had no idea it was taken. F said that it was crazy, how could he have taken anything so he let them search his room, which the bong was in. They found the missing bong and now F told the police that he never took it and my friend did. My friend was gone when the police came to talk to him and they left a card to call them. J (who was there in taking the bong and hiding it) is now saying that it was just my friend who took the bong. What should he do?

Rule # 1 is.... DO NOT TALK TO THE POLICE ! search for that video on you tube, it'll help you deal with situations like that should they ever arise again.

F simply needs to tell the truth.

They can dust the fucking bong and determine who is lying. If they refuse, F should insist on it in order to clear his name.

I thought people in college were smart,what was your freind j thinking,the cops are going to just let the bong slide.I hope he gets everything that is going to happen to his roommate 10x more.What a piece of sh!t.

Don't do anything.. Don't call them, they're 'trying' to build another case.. Right now they have nothing on your friend worth proceeding with.. A slip of the tongue on a seemingly unrelated matter could change that..
If the cops do track down your friend, he should ask three questions..
1) Whats this about?
2) Am I under arrest?
3) Then I can leave now?
Reserve any rights he thinks he has.. If they feel he doesn't have that right, they'll ignore and do as they please.. Dorms can have some shady policies that the police will use to their advantage.. Read the details in your contract.. Even if there are grounds to nullify evidence by chalenging the legitimacy of the regulation, it takes some legal force to pull it off..

What exactly is the crime?
Possession of an illegal item/substance? (Bongs are legal where I live, "intended for use" with tobacco)
Or is it for 'stealing' the bong, or tampering with evidence? The story's running circles in my head but as far as I see it, you don't really have anything to worry about. If you don't give the cops an inch, they won't do anything to you, at least in this scenario.

That's pretty obvious. All the more reason for F to tell the truth. He did nothing wrong.

This has nothing to do with underage drinking or bongs; and everything to do with interfering with an official police investigation. Provoking cops is never a good idea.

J committed a serious offense. F does not make himself a rat by protecting himself from a TRUE rat.

He did participate in the tampering, but that is irrelevant.. The other guy (J) is now saying it was entirely his friend.. This is a really good example of why you JUST KEEP YOUR FUCKING MOUTH SHUT!!! J can't actually know how events went down if he had no part in them.. By naming your friend he incriminated himself further.. They now have his statement of witness in evidence, and the missing bong in his room.. J just gave them their case against himself.. Your friend should just keep his mouth shut so he doesn't do the same.. They don't have enough to proceed.. If they track him down but they don't arrest him he can walk away without even acknowledging their presence..
Even if they do arrest him, he does not need to speak.. THEY NEED HIM TO HANG HIMSELF.. If its evident that he's the smart silent type, they'll cut him lose as soon as they're satisfied they can't crack him..

Dust the finger prints......LOL thats the dumbest thing i heard all day you really thing the cops are going to dust for finger prints?? on a bong?? lol you know how much it costs just to paythe salary of the guy that has to proccess the evidance over a bong?? Yea right thats rediculous bro..... LOL thats like when the cops came to my house and said we know you through this rock at that car and if you dont admit it we will get the finger prints off it....I was 15 at the time......I told the cop go ahead dust for finger prints i didnt do anything......Cop just left and that was it he never came back......You really think cops waste resources for such stupied things like finger prints on a bong?? come on now just saying that out load sounds stupid....

Further more you live in the fucking dorms bro you have no rights if you live in dorms the cops can do whatever they want you are not protected by normal laws when you live on campus come on now this is no brainer stuff here..... Like the guy said READ your contract bro they own everyting man they can come into your room for whatever reason they want........When i lived inthe dorms he had the cops comin in a dozen times for anyting from being to load to not answering the door when the RA knocked on it.......You are at the mercy of what ever school you go to....

Little side note storyy here i lived in the dorms at UCSC (santa cruz) we had bongs pipes all kinds shit taken away from us by the school on several different occasion.....and they have this big room where they put all the pipes and bongs and this and that......well at the end of the year we went to the admin guy and said hey we are movin off campus and we want all the stuff you took away from us......I swear to god they took us into this room and said ok what is yours......We took our bong and pipe and snagged a few things that wasnt even ours to begin with.....lol is that not the crazyest shit you ever heard?? I swear to god if someone told me this story i wouldnt fuckin believe it the only reason i belieive it was because i was there i was in the room.....It was like the school version of a evidance room big shelfs with shit all over it.......I couldnt beleive that they acutally let us have our bongs back of course this was after we showed profe that we where vacating the property.....but whatever thats still crazy i wonder if anyone else has ever had a simaler experiance.........This is santa cruz so that might have somting to do with it....but still crazy really......
