Planting Outside, How Big to Veg Indoors First?

I have heard several differing opinions on planting my starts outdoors in reference to just how much indoor vegging to do befor putting my girls in the ground. I am hoping that someone here will be able to clarify this for me.
One person has told me to place them in the ground as soon as roots are developed on the clones and they have been hardened to sunlight, however I also have seen where people grow 3 ft teens and then place them into the ground.
The only advantage I can see with letting them veg larger indoors first is getting a jump start on the season so as to get bigger plants, is this true?
I will be growing Indica and Indica dominant plants if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance

3ft sounds a bit much. The main thing with size is transporting them to patch by car/foot, at 3ft thats bulky. Try about 6"-18"

The bigger you start them the bigger they'll finish. If you put plants out too early they will start to flower due to the day length being short. If you wait and put them out later, they won't grow very big before summer. So growing them indoors gives you a jump start on size. Indica's especially befefit from this.
