Plant position question

Gotta weird question that was put to me yesterday - if you had a small space to grow in, could you grow plants by "training" them to grow horizontally so that they stayed close to the floor - say by tying them over occasionally so that they stayed low, and the bud/branches grew up toward the light? Is this even possible? Would there be a legit reason to do this?

Yes you can do this and i have seen it done, buddy grew a plant under a big 55 gal fish tank and trained to grow sideways and all the branches with vert while the main stock went horz.
