Hello community! I have looked at various posts on this site for quite a while but just recently created an account as I am looking for input on planning a grow. So I live in an apartment, so stealth is somewhat of an issue.
Space:
I want to build a grow box into a dresser, something with decent vertical dimensions. Thinking about 6' vertical, split into 2 shelves?
Lighting:
For lighting I really want to go with LED because of the lower heat and power consumption. I realize they are more expensive but I've been looking at some comparison tests and the finished bud looks like a crystal castle! Gorgeous stuff.
Medium:
For the planting method, I was thinking hydro setup although I see a lot of people just use soil on this forum. Would love to hear opinions on that as well. I've heard hydro gets much better results because leaving the roots directly exposed to water allows much quicker absorption of nutrients.
Odor:
As this will most likely reside in my closet or somewhere in the interior of my apartment, direct ventilation to the outside air would be impractical, as I don't want exhaust hoses around as that is a dead giveaway. So I would need to ventilate the grow box with some kind of active carbon filter. The only problem is, from what I've been reading in order to push air through one of these bad boys it needs to be a substantial fan, possibly generating a lot of noise? And to just to cover all my bases im going to put up an ionic air filter in the vicinity.
Noise:
If going the hydro route I will have fans and pumps to worry about. Is there any kind of insulation or something to reduce noise to a whisper?
Lighting Arrangement:
Also, I know from my reading that distance from the plants is a crucial ingredient for success. If I am building my box from scratch, then could I install the lights on a moveable shelf and have various mounting points at intervals of a couple inches? That way as soon as the plants grow close enough, I can move up the lights giving them more room to reach for the sky!
Time:
So this is probably one of the more confusing aspects to growing cannabis. I hear all different manner of time frames to expect your harvest. From "Chris' New Perpetual Multi-Strain Grow", it appear that after approximately eight weeks he has obtained a completed product. However, i've heard other friends claim that I will have to wait at least three months before my first batch is complete. From what I've read on LED lighting systems, if done correctly they can increase the speed of your harvest. If someone could clarify the time frame for the kind of setup im describing, that would be lovely.
Power:
How much would a grow like this add on to my electric bill every month? Hopefully not a whole lot especially with the LED lights versus CFL. The pumps for hydro and the fans I assume are relatively low power consumption.
I know I am surely missing some stuff, and I realize that growing cannabis can be a complex process with many things to consider, and that I have a long road of learning ahead in order to be successful. So please correct any mistakes in my understanding thus far. And consider this my formal introduction to everyone here
