Piecing together a grow cab

Yup, this is yet another “I’m building a grow cabinet” thread. I hope the fact that I’m in the planning phase hasn’t already scared you off but my goal is to have some people read over my plans and point to areas where problems/improvements can be made. I found a very decent cabinet at home depot that I am hoping I can use as a foundation for my project: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xj7/R-100576023/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Assembled Depth (In Inches) : 20.5 in
Assembled Height (In Inches) : 71.75 in
Assembled Weight (In LBS) : 128 lb
Assembled Width (In Inches) : 29.625 in
Color/Finish : White
Maximum Load : 70 lb

I am a little worried that the back will be shitty particleboard forcing me to buy something more durable for the back panel. As long as whatever is in the box is strong enough to hold a carbon scrubber and prevent light from getting in during flowering I’ll be sound as a pound. A good coating in mylar might also help keep it lightproof. The intake will just be passive.

My goal is 4 plants to stay at the misdemeanor level with an emphasis on the best yield for the space I will be using. The cab with serve as my veg and flower chamber and I will not be keeping a mother for clones. Living in an apartment means I need to stealth only to an extent necessary to go under the radar of a potential maintenance visit. That does mean though that I won’t be using a cooltube on my lighting since the only emissions will have to be a carbon scrubber fan on the back. My current plans are to run a 250w HPS (maybe a SON-T Agro) and if my heating doesn’t go through the roof I will supplement with CFLs for at least vegging, maybe flowering too. If heating is a problem I may throw in a few LEDs into the mix.

I am well funded so will be trying a DWC rig for a hydro grow (and a nearby aquarium to help with the noises.) I haven’t decided on a strain but since all acquisitions will be feminized from seed banks I know I have a lot to pick from. I’m sure I can find a low odor strain that fits my height requirements. I’m also prepared to do some form of LST if need be. After I get a grow under my belt I’ll probably play around with a ScroG.

So I suppose that is where I am at with my project. I have a strong conviction and plan to document and journal everything I do to help out the RIU community. Let me know what you guys think :bigjoint:.

i would recommend using ONA odor control cause all carbon filters i have seen will stick out about 6 inches out the back which isnt so stealthy! and for light escaping or entering through the fans you can make light traps! i have some pics in my thread of the light traps! As far as the back wall, you could get 1/4" particle board our any strong wood to do the back! hope this helps if you have any other questions i might be able to help with just let me know! PEACE

p.s. link to my thread for pics! https://www.rollitup.org/indoor-growing/298714-new-stealth-dresser-grow-2.html

Thanks for the reply MT! The odor control suggestion is a very good one. With such a small grow and if I select a low odor strain ONA gel should be all I need. I'll do some reading up on my options with that route. Your light traps look pretty effective too, I'm sure that would be a simple thing to jerry rig up. Planning my light times around any potential maintenance visit would also work but I'm not about to skimp on the stealth. I swear the most inspirational thing I've seen is ancible's cabinet in his 06-05-2007, 03:34 AM post here: https://www.rollitup.org/indoor-growing/14886-apartment-growing-4.html. You could hide that baby in the DEA headquarters.

So I'm also not sure how to determine how big of an exhaust fan I’ll need. I figure with such a big cabinet and only a 250w HPS SON-T Agro heat won’t be too much of an issue, but I also know that with passive intake my fan will be working harder than usual. If I can get away without an intake fan to help reduce the noise level I will. Anybody out there with a 250w HPS cabinet able to share their exhaust/heat experience (links to similar journals are always welcome too :))? I also won’t have to keep the doors shut and locked all the time so while the light is on I always have the option to crack the door or use ice.
