PC tower Grow Box Tips?

I'm new to growing, as well as this forum.:leaf:
I'm planning to make a Grow Box out of an old PC tower, that can hold about two small plants (I'm not going to go bigger until I get my own place).
I haven't grown before, but I have been scanning the internet for the last 3 weeks, so don't tell me something obvious, I just want to know real people with experience in this field.
I know that I can connect PC fans to the tower and connect it to the power supply, as a ventilation system. I am wondering If you can run a HID lighting system, or another good growing light, on the Power Supply? If it can it would limit the amount of cables running out of the computer, which would help.

If there are any tips when doing this kind of Growing, (like security, or smell prevention when Budding), it would be a great help. I am planning to do a Journal, with pictures, and post it every once and a while.

This kind of setup is often called a 'micro grow'. You might search the threads for other people doing this. PC cases are a popular choice.

The short answer is 'No'. You cannot run HIDs off the voltages from a PC pwr supp. HID need several hundred volts of AC current to operate and some need a 3000V pulse to start the arc in the lamp.

You can find fluros that run off low DC voltages but I doubt you will find the wattages and spectrum you need.

LEDS will run off a PC pwr supp but that's an expensive and somewhat iffy option.

Another thing about HIDs is that they require a starting ballast which is bulky. I believe there are 70W HPS bulbs that are self contained and dont need an external ballast.

In your setup, for a first grow, cfls or tube fluoros sounds right.
