Lumpus,
You do understand that the hps bulb you are looking at only fits a 400watt hps ballast system? It will not fit or function in a regular socket.

If you are tight on cash you should get some good soil and a couple more CFLs. 6500k (aka 'Daylight') for veg.

Or open the backdoor and set it outside. Free light!!! If you're planning to grow with a few bucks here and there, you're better off buying a sack of el cheapo with that extra $20. Save up some bank first, buy everything you need, then start dropping seeds in the dirt. That way will save you a lot of tylenol down the road.

I disagree. The OP has a CFL going already. $20 could be enough to at least get the grow working. It won't be the best, but a couple more lights and some good soil, maybe find a thermometer around the house and some foil/white paint. He gets a little box setup and he will end up with some bud.

lumpus - you need 6500k (daylight) CFL bulbs for veg and 2700k (soft white) for flower. I find better results with mixed lighting. I use a 3:1 ratio. For example if you are vegging and you have 3 25w 6500k bulbs, put 1 25w 2700k bulb in. In flower have 3 2700k with 1 6500k of similar wattage.

I started out broke with 6 cfls and four 2ft flour tubes and five weeks later, that just wasn't enough light. I just hate to see someone piss away some money like I did. Can it be done? Sure! Is it worth the effort with just a few cfls? Not to me. It's amazing what a difference a $140 HPS will make. I do agree with you on the idea of a few cfls to get started. If the OP is able to come up with some extra cash in a few weeks, it'd be wisely spent to purchase a mh/hps light. Surely you would agree. I didn't mean to come across as a dick and say he's waisting his time, if that's how it sounded. Was just saying it's better to plan ahead and get a set up that will go the grow duration with good results. I know well how hard it is to get things on a tight budget. I have a Don Perignon taste on a Natural Lite budget. LOL

Yes, HPS will certainly give better yield, denser nugs, faster growth ect. but if he's on a tight budget just starting out, I would say just starting and growing some bud will give him good practice growing. Hopefully he can learn from the grow, maybe get some decent bud, and eventually save up for a good HPS. When he is ready to grow with the HPS he already has some practice under his belt.

Sry about the double post.

You're not wasting you're time bro, look around on here, there has been some dank bud grown with CFL. CFL is fine for a personal stash. If you get more serious about growing and you can upgrade to HPS eventually, cool, if not, there are plenty of good growers on here that do small grows with CFLs and they have great results.
