Let's hear some thoughts on this

Do you support it/oppose it? Why?

I think it's a great idea! Much safer, reliable and predictable than traditional dating! You get to know the person immediately, before ever even meeting them! You get to pick and choose who to see, before you ever even see them!

I think it helps to eliminate some of the unseen factors that might seep through some of the cracks online dating prevents without having to physically turn somebody down because of (whatever reason)

Overall, I think it keeps people more safe while avoiding some of the most common situations most people are concerned with when committing to an otherwise blind date


What have your experiences in online dating been like?

I'd like to open this thread with some experience, but you'll have to forgive me on that front, I've never personally dated anyone I've met online before. Could someone please comment in and fill that void? Much appreciated!


This thread is designed to potentially make that transition a little bit easier for those of us that are still uninitiated with the experience. I'd say it's a good bet that most of us who frequent RIU are of potential dating age, SO, why shouldn't we take total advantage of that?

Who are you? - I'm not asking what's your name?.. Where do you live?.. I'm asking who are you as a person? What do you like to do on your free time? What kind of music do you listen to? Etc. You know, the kinds of things someone who might like to date you would want to know?

It should go without saying, but feel free to be as personal or as vague as you'd like

Pro tip: it does not hurt to have a video chat or actual phone call before meeting. The age of texting/ typing allows people to come across more compatible on the Internet than they might be in real time situations.
Unless you are just looking to hook up. I hear Grinder is good for that.

Safer? I cannot speak to that. A lot of online predators. Or people catfishing.

I saw the commercial for herpes medication. First of all, I know commercials are getting ridiculous, but the thing that tripped me out about this commercial was not how they made it look like your life get a whole lot better after herpes -- you can rock climb and jet ski and all that! -- they make it look like lifebegins with herpes.

I met my wife the old fashion way never met a girl online. I would think you are going to want to get to know her first as most online dating women can't seem to hold down a man in real life. In other words desperate as are the men too though only 2 guys I know with women they met online couldn't get pussy if they sold it in Walmart but desperate women online worked fine for one of them. :)

I did talk to one girl from the internet then found out she has 3 boys. Lol, Also some girl from Russia was saying she was coming to America then suddenly I was supposed to pay for the ticket. Lol

I was married a few years before the public internet so I never knew online dating. I can't relate to these long term internet relationships, seems more like personaIized porn. I suppose you could meet online to start for a week, but there's really no substitute for face to face relationships where you can have actual physical contact. Anything less would pretty much suck...

Ive dated a few guys i met online. Its hard enough weeding out the crazies before u even get to that point. But it always comes down to chemistry and thats not something you can get from a website.

When I separated and eventually divorced I used plenty of fish, other than weeding out a bunch of whacko's I found it great. Lots of one-nighter's for a while but eventually I met the girl I'm living with now, we've been together for 6 years. You have to be a good judge of character and spend some time chatting to weed out the whacko's for sure.

I don't have personal experience from dating online, but when I get to the point of actually wanting to get into a serious relationship again, that is what I plan to do. Like Dannyboy said, it's all about chemistry when you're face to face. I think dating sites are a good way to get to that point, they give you exposure to many potential mates in your area and allow you to filter out many (certainly not all) incompatible traits to avoid wasting time. I personally know of three couples that met on dating sites (two on Match.com) that are now married with children: they started out typing back and forth, then progressed to phone calls for a couple of weeks, then met in public. If one is very busy, or very reclusive (like me), it seems that one's chances of meeting a quality mate are greatly increased via such tools. For meeting prostitutes, I use theeroticreview.com and it works like a charm. I've met many compatible escorts and I now have my favorites. 2 or 3 times per month keeps me satisfied for now, and it's actually cheaper than dating was for me. Plus, no guessing if I'm getting laid or not ;)

I've used pretty much all of them at one point, POF, Okcupid, Match, even Tinder, and would totally use them again if I were single. They are a great way of meeting people. I still went to bars, social events, etc., and met someone people that way too, but why not add more tools to your arsenal if they are available? That's the way I always looked at it. Heck I met my current gf on an online dating site and we've been together almost 3 years and engaged now

I have had some really great chats/text with guys, but in person they lack all social skills beyond ordering from Starbucks. complete dolts, their auto correct can spell better then they can pronounce words.

I don't smoke or drink and I don't work in the same cars I use for personal stuff. my house is other wise devoid of anything that might suggest anything. I keep a bong, n stuff for friends but that's it.

met my last BF on a online auto forum: then in person at an auto cross event 2011. him in his subaru sti and me in my lancer evo IV at the time. he asked me to marry him in 2013, and I told him everything he was shocked I could hide something like that for so long. I felt bad, but I had a sworn pact of confidence I wouldn't not break. for weeks he didn't believe me wanted me to show him. I wouldn't do it, what if he got mad and destroyed, told more people or whatever.

in the end, at my fault he said he couldn't trust me. he couldn't understand that it was not wholly my place to disclose information, that may effect other people, good people I have known and loved for over a decade.

so yeah, he started with some tart, and left me to my geriatric crew and their wives and kids.

some of you I know, cant just tell every stunt you meet, hey yeah man I'm a farmer check it out.

how long till you spill the beans.....
