Whereas I don't suggest this for indoor gardening, if your garden is a closet or other very small space, because it does smell somewhat. I have been using urine in a spare bedroom and the smell doesn't get overpowering and is in fact undetectable in the rest of my house. Below is the article that convinced me.

Human Urine Safe, Productive Fertilizer

It's loaded with nitrogen and shouldn't pose health risk, experts say

MONDAY, Oct. 8 (HealthDay News) -- Cash-strapped farmers shouldn't look far for a source of free fertilizer, according to a new study that finds human urine to be a great source of nitrogen and other minerals.

The "yuck" factor aside, scientists who used urine to help raise a bumper crop of cabbages said the practice may not be a bad idea.
"Urine is a valuable fertilizer which poor people could use to increase yields and not contaminate their environment. It is a resource, not a pollutant, if correctly managed," said Helvi Heinonen-Tanski, leader of a research group at the University of Kuopio's Department of Environmental Sciences in Finland.
They decided to look into how human urine could be used to help farmers and at the same time save water and reduce the contamination of water resources, added Surendra K. Pradhan, a research student at the university and the study's lead author.
"It is important to areas which are not connected with wastewater treatment systems," he added.
The use of urine as fertilizer is uncommon, but it is increasing in some parts of Finland, the researchers said. It also has been used to fertilize barley and cucumbers, the study said. "We assume the nitrogen contents of human urine could be a good fertilizer for many other plants or crops," Pradhan said.
The researchers chose cabbage as a test crop, because it needs a lot of nitrogen, it is distributed worldwide, and it can be preserved as sauerkraut.
The cabbage fertilized with urine was compared with similar plots of cabbage that either went unfertilized or where commercial fertilizer was used. At harvest, the cabbage enriched with the urine had several advantages: It was slightly larger, it grew to its maximum size more quickly, and, for most of the growth cycle, it suffered less bug damage than the commercially fertilized variety.
Cabbage from all three plots was made into sauerkraut and taste-tested by 20 panelists. Each type tasted different, but all were rated "good," the study said.
As a result of the findings, the team concluded that urine produced by one person over a year would be enough to grow 160 cabbages -- that's 64 kilograms (141 pounds) more cabbage than could be grown in a similar plot fertilized with commercial fertilizer. They recommend collecting urine from eco-type toilets, storing it, then scattering it on the soil around the plants rather than directly on them.
The study was expected to be published in the Oct. 31 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Urine is "a good natural nitrogen containing substance and probably could be easily utilized" as a fertilizer, agreed Dr. Philip Tierno, director of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University Medical Center, New York City. "There's nothing wrong with using it," Tierno said. He added that there is little risk of contamination by urine-borne pathogens, because they would be in competition with microorganisms found in the soil and would "probably lose the battle."
Urine is actually a relatively clean substance, added Tierno, author of the book The Secret Life of Germs.
Barry Swanson, a food scientist at Washington State University, had a similar reaction. The study "demonstrates pretty clearly that although this might be somewhat objectionable in our hygienic population, it probably has pretty practical application in other countries," he said.
"It makes a lot of sense. Human urine does contain nitrogen. No matter what you apply to the soil, plants take up organic or inorganic material in the soil irrespective of where it comes from," Swanson added. He said urine is a good source of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous.
Preserving the cabbage by making sauerkraut also has some advantages, he said. The large amount of salt used in making sauerkraut inhibits the growth of pathogens. So, if any pathogens were unexpectedly present, the salt would eliminate them.

use a half cup or so of your own urine at night after spending the day drinking and eating and are hydrated to one gallon of water for a fert that I worry will burn a little. So maybe less. Morning piss will burn your plants like a dog pissing on yer yard. Too concentrated. But it is only nitrogen. So no P in Pee. :)

here is some proof of urine fertilized MJ. I know fertilizer can be bought, but why if I can produce it myself for free?

These plants are 7weeks old, that's 7 weeks from germinated seeds to now. Yes I use LEDs so that's why pics are pink. I use dilution of 1 part urine to 5 parts water. I also provide phosphorus by employing duck poop tea. Horribly stinky stuff until soil absorbs, but very potent.

ok so it says urine is good for cabbage or leafy plants..I dont want to grow lettuce or anything leafy myself though..seems that cannabis doesnt need so much nitrogen except for maybe in the vegetative state

i tried using urine for N and it fucked my ph up. i believe my current problem is because my Ph is too acidic and does not allow for the uptake or cal and mag

if your broke i suppose it would be ok if you cant afford nutes; but if you cant afford a Ph test be very careful

Azoo is correct, I use urine during veg stage and have seen dramatic growth since I began using. For those who keep saying; Why would you do this when you can buy chemical ferts? The obvious answer is that I don't spend a penny to produce a very high nitrogen fertilizer. Secondly, it is my intent to provide organic product for medical patients, and urine falls firmly in the organic category especially as I only eat organic myself. As to smell, I grow in soil, and the soil so completely absorbs the urine that after one night smell is gone except if you scrape the soil and get your nose right down there over it. If you research this practice, you will find that, though Finland stands out ( re: article I posted ) as a nation looking into urine fertilization, the use of urine has been going on almost since the dawn of agriculture. Perhaps we need to consider why we are all so willing to trust some commercial industry ( out make a buck ) and be so resistant to embracing concepts which are thousands of years old ( and promise to save you some bucks ). The most telling thing for me was a careful examination of some of the " top " marijuana fertilizers, and the realizations that though they typically offer nothing different than any other fertilizer, the expense is as much as 5X the price of ordinary fertilizers. I think they saw you guys coming and baked a cake.

Regardless of the proven benefits I would still feel like a friggin dink telling folks that I pissed in a cup and measured out exact amounts to mix with water to feed my plants. That, and it does not matter to me how short of a period it takes for the stench to dissipate. The smell of piss is not something I want to live with for any amount of time. For all you folks that use pee-pee on your ladies, go for it but count me out.

Again I must point out that in using urine, you must dilute to avoid burn and the Ph thing. I started with soil with Ph of 7 and I use urine ( during veg stage ) every other watering. My plants will be going 12/12 next friday, and soil tests at Ph 6.75 so as long as it is diluted properly it has very little effect on Ph. I dilute mine 1 part urine to 5 parts water. Also, when I water with urine, the following watering I use twice as much water to provide minor flush. I would also theorize that the guy who had his ph whacked out perhaps didn't water deep enough to evenly distribute that urine, and soil beneath could be proper Ph. One final thing on Ph, here in Colorado we typically have the exact opposite concern in that our soil tends to be alkali and I am fighting a battle to keep Ph from going over 7. So I will admit that perhaps urine is a major assistance in dropping Ph when you need to make it drop.

First of all if any of you have researched urine you would realize that its gods fertilizer. Monitor your conductivity/tds and pH. Keep it between 400 and 700 ppm. Urine is usually about 6 pH so it's pretty good without a pH adjustment.

"An aqueous solution of organic and inorganic substances, mostly waste products of metabolism. The kidneys maintain the internal milieu of the body by excreting these waste products and adjusting the loss of water and electrolytes to keep the body fluids relatively constant in amount and composition. The urine normally is clear and has a specific gravity of 1.017–1.020, depending upon the amount of fluid ingested, perspiration, and diet. The increase in specific gravity above that of water is due to the presence of dissolved solids, about 60% of which are organic substances such as urea, uric acid, creatinine, and ammonia; and 40% of which are inorganic substances such as sodium, chloride, calcium, potassium, phosphates, and sulfates. Its reaction is usually acid (pH 6) but this too varies with the diet."

Urine contains about 70% of the nutrients released from the human body, including 85% of the nitrogen and 65% of the phosphorus and potassium.

Urine is a well balanced (NPK) source of nutrients and contains easily accessible plant nutrients. The exact nutrient content depends on the food consumption. Swedish researchers report that
the NPK ratio in urine is 12 - 1.1 – 3.3.
I wouldn't call this balanced for MJ. I usually add about 100ppm of a P-K fertilizer just to give the urine a little more balance. I believe in giving my plant decent nitrogen throughout its whole life. It's a little un-traditional but I believe it keeps the plant happy.
Urine also will have trace amounts of very valuable components as follows.

Protein and sugar, about 300 mg combined per day of urination.

Varous gram negative cocci and rod bacteria in very low doses.

Numerous organic salts and acids.

Enough magnesium, calcium, and sulfur to keep your plant happy. The average human excretes 150mg of calcium oxide and 50mg of Magnesium Oxide per day. Sulfur excretion per day is about 500 to 1000 ppm. Iron is about 30ppm per day.

What I've been doing recently is making my plant water about 200 ppm urine with about 100 ppm P-K with a pH of 6.5. I've been watering her every time with this mix and she seems fine.

like I told Deno inhis PM to me about htis, if you guys want to piss in your plants be my guest, but when the boys are smoking my schwagg I dont want someone to say "Hey this tastes like piss," "Well now that you mention it I piss in my plants"
It isnt for everyone and I for one will pay the nutrients.
It may be "Pissing"away my money, but it works.
Do you shit in your plants as well?

You are also going to get just about ever trace mineral known to man from your pee. Just about every metal that goes into your body leaves via your pee. Another thing you may want to consider is taking a daily vitamin to balance your system and give your urine a much better kick. I'm sorry to anyone who's grossed out about urine for fertilizer, it's mother natures kitchen and that will always be better than some b.s. fertilizer that human's come up with.

The best human fertilizers have all sorts of natural products, kelp, bone meal, fish emulsion. Cmon people urine is harmless if applied correctly.

Jesus,

LOL, I understand your concern. And what you said is funny. Adding urine to your water in very dilute quantities will never even make your soil stink, let alone your plant. All the nutrients are primary nutes so the plant doesen't suck up the stink, it only sucks up the water and ions. No smell dude. Also human shit that's been composted for 6 months is no longer human shit, its red wiggler worm shit. Basically the best soil you can find in the world.
