Nutrient Varieties

Hey everyone, I'm fixing to enter the stage of growth where my plants are going to need nutes and I was wondering what brand to go with. I'm inclined (as in have already bought) to go with miracle grow...its 24-8-16. I was wondering if you all thought that would be ok or am I about to make a major screwup?

Anybody have good choices for nutrients? I keep hearing foxfarm, and I'm researching them now...I just wanted to get everyones opinion.

"Jamaica, say you will..." Damn...now THAT brings back a few cobwebs!

To use MG or to not use MG...well..it's an age old debate.

BIG number ferts scare me. Just 'cus it's strong doesn't mean it's gonna make yer plant grow strong. In fact, toxification os a big problem with these types of nutrients.

Foxfarm is good stuff..but not all of their line is organic (only Big Bloom and it's very weak). I'm an organic kinda guy..so to me..if it's chem it's all the same stuff...just a different packaging.

IMO, what fugs these nutes up the most is the N source, Ammoiniacal nitrogen will make your plant grow..but you'll see more STEM growth than antyhting else because it releases quickly. NITRATE nitrogen is a lot better..it will not make your plant stretch nearly as much..and will keep the internodes tighter when the plant does grow.

MG will work..but I always ask myself this when it comes to nutrients/equipment spending money in conjunction with this plant:

Is a few bucks in saving worth jeopardizing yer grow? Not here.

good luck

Interesting, what about something like Grow Big plant food, it's a 6-4-4

Not much difference, IMO. If you used the MG at 1/4 strength you would have a 6-2-4 fertilizer mix. Still chemical.

It's OK to use..it just depends on how you want to approach things. If I were going to use a chem nute I'd just go hydro.

What I think is key...in soils..is to use microbes and mycorrihzae to build a root mass early on...and THEN start worrying bout the top/veg growth. If you want to go this way..organic nutes are the only way to go as chem nutes will basically sterilize your soils and kill your microbes. Same thing with chlorinated water.

anyway...read...read..read is the key. I hope I made some sense...if not..just do whatever man! LOL

good luck

Well is the nitrogen in foxfarms big bloom nitrate nitrogen or ammoniacal nitrogen? I understand and really appreciate your advice for what you're saying as far as the difference is concerned, it's just that a limiting factor in all of this is that I want to use fertilizers that I can buy locally, and pay in cash. I realize I'm going to have to order a few bits and pieces required for my grow online, but want to keep it to a minimum.
