Noob's First Grow, For to Learn Things. . .

First time poster, relatively new user. Pretty new to the homegrown scene, so criticism's and suggestions would be welcome. Did a bit of reading on here, and a few other sources, prior to this grow, hopefully it served me OK.

Grow Room Info

  • The grow room is a 'twist' on SpaceBuckets, a ~35 gallon trash can. Lined with pandafilm, cheaply thrown together.
  • One 4 inch outtake fan (80, 120 cfm for a >5 cubic meter area) at the top, with intake holes on the bottom for air circulation and smell scrubbing.
  • 4x 23watt CFL 5000k light bulbs, plan on switching over to 2x 5000k lights and 4x 14 watt 2700k bulbs for flowering.
  • A small ~5 inch tray of water + 3 sponges (a crude attempt at humidity control, as I thought the room was being vented too fast to keep a decent humidity range.
Planting Medium Info

  • Plants started in a homemade humidity dome, transferred to small transparent solo cups for a while. Final resting place are some 1.3L little potting plants, as seen in pics.
  • Soil is FFOF soil, were started in little starter pellets of IDK what.
  • To supplement these, FF GrowBig and FF TigerBloom liquid nutes are \ will be added to water.
  • Water is storebought distilled, PH balanced by relying on rather vauge PH testing strips. (6-7pH).
Seeds are just random bagseed, figured they would make for a fine test run. Out of 7 that started germination, 4 made it into the solo cups, and one was lost to grower ineptitude.
*One of the 3 plants have leaves with the tips missing. Grower took FIMming to a whole new level :X

The first node or two of leaves are showing what I believe to be nute burn, chalking that up to my starting in FFOF and having the GENIUS insight of adding about 1tspn of FFGB liquid to a gallon of water, probably too much and too soon for the wee ones.

At this point in time (about 20 or so days from solo cup transplant, first or second set of true leaves) they are around five nodes tall, very short and bushy IMO. Suppose they might be an Indica strain of some type, which would be fine given the size of my grow space. You can't see from the pictures, but the plants are already starting to bump the trash can walls. (If this space was used in the future, it would probably be for keeping a mother.)
As of today, they are being thrown into flowering lighting. I'm starting them small, not looking for POUNDAGE, even a single nug would be considered a successful harvest.

Noob Questions : First off, are the bottom leaves nute burned? No temp \ RH sensor is installed at the time, although one would be acquired if a more serious grow were undertaken. . .are these little ones possibly showing signs of dehydration, or any other grower negligence? Could one chalk the 'short, stubby' nature of these plants up to inadequate lighting?

Welp, suppose that's it for my first post in this "Grow Journal". Thanks for wasting part of your life reading this!

~One week update. Five days into 12\12 lighting.

Things are going okay so far, it seems. They seem to be thriving, despite the less-than-optimal growing conditions.

The pots are only 1.3 liter's worth of space, maybe 1L of soil. I understand there's not enough room and that root tangling will occur later on, but as this is a 'experimental' run i'm not worried. Was planning on losing one or two when sexing happened, but the switch to flowering happened later than it should have.

Running on Fox Farms Tiger Bloom nutes now, about 3ml \ 1L of water. They seem to be liking this, no more mottled leaves or signs of nutrient deficiencies or over watering.

Attached are pics of each plant, with a close-up of some funny hairs at the internodes on one - hopefully this is a sign that the flowering stage is starting up!

Another update to come in a week or two!

Stay Classy, RIU

Another report, about 1.5 weeks into flower lighting.

Due to a few circumstances outside of my control, they had a good 24hr period of complete darkness, followed by some wonky light-on time. To my surprise, they grew a few inches upward! I'm starting to think the strain i'm growing has some sativa traits, as it's going to outgrow it's home soon.

Attached are a few pictures of the plants, they've been 'topped' because a few of the leaves were getting too close to the CFL bulbs. Just a few of the new ones were scorched, so it's no big deal. I knew from the start that these plants would need to be 'mutilated' later on, due to not being able to LST them early on. But boy, did I really misjudge how much they'd grow once being thrown into flowering!

A few of these babies are starting to show their sex : i believe one is definitely showing those beeeautiful little white hairs, and one seems to me like it's showing man parts. Hopefully i'll be able to get rid of one plant once i'm sure of gender, giving the others a little room to stretch their leaves.

Thanks stutterfiend for the kind words, it's nice to have feedback!

So. Things have happened. Haven't posted due to some personal issues, but all's better now.

Things were going good. The main female got a good start on some buds, they stopped growing upwards, and both remaining plants are showing white pistils?. Then, a mistake was made.

I decided the leaf tips were showing signs of nute burn, and started feeding them just plain o'l water. It wasn't until a few leaves got to be pretty bad, and several stems had turned to a nice rhubarb-ish red, that I realized it was really showing (at least in my best judgement) nutrient deficiencies. Given that these things are in pots FAR too small for their size, I was bound to run into this problem in hindsight.

I've gotten back into a regular feeding schedule with Fox Farms Tiger Bloom, and am hoping that they stop deteriorating and make it to harvest.

Will post more as things happen. Till now, enjoy the young nug shots.
