newby...can i grow 1 plant under standard 100w light bulb

you could it would be better than nothing i guess.I used a regular shop fixture with two four ft regular floresent tubes and it worked pretty good for cloneing and veg gotta keep it close so u dont get to much stetch thats the worst part

I would go with some CFL's Preferably more than one and both spectrums. Most people will say to go with a MH or HPS but don't sound like you got that kind of money right now?

Incandescent bulbs won't produce much, if anything. I agree that CFL's offer an inexpensive way to start a grow. Get a pack for around $10 and have at it.

incandescent lighting is useless for growing plants. The light is too dispersed and you can't place them close because of the heat. Go CFL for now and if you get into it and want to increase yields, go for mh/hps system.
