Newbie question about Metal Halide reflector

Hi All,
I'm new to the community and planning my first grow. I was going to use CFL lighting but I lucked into some 320W metal halide lamps removed from a warehouse, reportedly they only have 300 hours on the bulbs and some new bulbs were included.

My question is about the reflectors that came with the units. Each lamp came with a lexan reflector and I'm not sure if I should use the reflectors, my gut reaction is 'why not' with the reflector at the highest position the bulb will be about two inches above the bottom of the reflector. I might also add that these bulbs are meant to burn vertically. I will be building a room in my garage to house the lamps and it will be painted white inside two 320W bulbs. I plan to build a metal reflector above the lamp ballasts and the room will be ventilated to the outdoors and intake will be from the garage.

The bulbs are a soft white bulb and from what I have read hps is best for flowering but decent results can be obtained from metal halide, the price of the lamp and bulb (each) was less than the replacement cost of the bulb!

I am growing strictly for personal so a huge yield is not critical.

I'm thinking the room should be about 4' x 4' with 2 320w HD probalby only use one during the early stages of veg. First grow will be bag seed and later buy some good seeds online. I'd like to harvest something around christmas, so I am starting right away, probably using natural light while the plants are still very small (maybe cfl during the seedling stage).

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lexan. Are you talking the bowl-shaped plastic reflectors used in high bay lighting? If so they intentionally deflect 20% of your light up. You can paint them with flat white or reflective paint to cure that. MH can carry you all the way from seed to weed although I prefer HPS.

Yes these are clear plastic, I thought about painting them white. If I had to guess I would paint the outside. What would you recommend?
