Newb harvest time observation

So new grower here (naturally) with 5 plants harvested under my belt. Anyway, I have been reading everything I can to unravel the "truth" about the right time to harvest. What I've come up with, is that home/medical/personal growers seem to believe a minimum of 15% amber and a late harvest is better. On the other hand, commercial and black market growers who rely on income from their product scream to harvest early to "maximize" potency. Is potency so important if the end user prefers it harvested late? It just seems suspicious to me that those who make money push so aggressively for a shorter grow cycle. Fact is you cut a week off your grow cycle and you increase your profit by at least 10%. When information from the "experts" is confusing I've found that the easiest way to the truth is to figure out who is making personal gain from their position. In this case its pretty obvious which side of the argument has personal gain. Now all those that cultivate to sell can call me names and tell me I'm wrong. Which I might be....

If your growing personal then you harvest according to your preferred effect . Early = happy energetic, late = sleepy deep stone . This a vaege distription, I like the happy buzz .
Perfect answer. Nothing wrong with personal preference. I was making an observation and posted to test the theory. I'm just trying to figure out when the consensus is the best time to harvest, because its going to take me quite a while to find out through practical application. I could be 100% wrong, just in almost every competing argument there is at least one side that is influenced by personal profit. Just wondering if this was one of those cases. So I assume you don't produce to sell? Because early harvest weed (probably way to early-what my medical dispensary sells makes me sick, opposite of medicine-why I started growing to begin with) gives me a very uncomfortable headache....

by the sound of that id say harvested early and quick cured iv found quick cure bud gives me a headache again a profit thing, sooner you harvest and the quicker you cure the quicker you can sell and the quicker you can start the next grow, i personally harvest at about 5-10% amber i like rge couch lock feeling but still like to be able to do stuff around the house

How do ya figure that cutting a week early increases profit by 10%?

The plants pack on a lot weight the last couple weeks.

Good point, I was just thinking less one week equals more harvests, less power/water/nutrition consumption, etc. You would increase end profits by a minimum of 10% if you can cut a week off your grow and harvest the same weight. Advantage of hydro systems obviously. But as you pointed out, if you lose significant weight then the only way to actually know if it = increased profit would be to run side by side grows and see how it weighs out. I don't think I will ever grow that kind of weight, I was just curious to see if the bias I thought I observed was real. But you've made me think it might be bullshit and some just prefer younger bud. I think I actually personally prefer my bud right in the middle with about 10% amber but its going to be a year or so of experimenting with my grows before I know for sure.
Thanks for the feedback all.

its simple really. breeder told you it takes 60 days of flowering to mature. @ 60 days look through a ten dollar microscope, if all the trichomes are cloudy the weed will be awesome if harvested now, a little more droppy eyed if left to degrade. If they're still clear you're room is not tuned like the breeder room maybe, no c02, high heats, cold winter whatever. check every day as they cloud, when they first begin to degrade the contents of the trichomes to an amber color harvest now, you've almost missed the sweet spot

never met anyone n all my years that preferred a harvest before the weed was mature. this is the weed that doesnt perform, the weed that leaves you wanting every time. the one that makes your heart thump....let it cloud up fully instead, like the book says

Depends on what you consider mature.
Even at night, I do not care for the couch lock, fuzzy headed, high. Course that's the only thing available on the street around here. It's one big reason I like growing now.
But if you harvest too early then you will sacrifice too much in final weight...so it's a balancing game.

OP, I'm not sure how a 'early' harvest could possibly yield 10% more in profit...even if you factor in all costs for the grow, 10% is quite a bit..

I guess, but with a thousand strains to choose from a thousand breeders, I got so lucky with these 25, I can pick daytime, smoke, night time smoke, fun smile smoke and chines eyes from laughing so hard all night smoke, at a whim, harvesting each at 65 days.

I think I'm just pissed and bitter that the dispensary weed that is the only legal place to get it (and is an illegal monopolistic business by law-not sure how that works) has such gross terrible product. And yet they know better, but because they also know they have a captive customer base (in Vermont you can only use the dispensary listed to your medical card). And then reading so many for profit growers on here screaming about the need for early harvest I just kind of maybe came to the wrong conclusions. I sincerely hope that dispensary fails quickly. And it will, our local government is dragging their feet but reform is inevitable. I love growing and don't ever plan on being dependent on someone else' product again!
Anyway, thanks for the feedback guys. Probably jumped the gun on starting this thread... LOL
