New place with a walk in closet!

First of all I would like to say thanks for all of the information you guys have made available and this wouldn’t be possible without this communities help. I am moving into a new place next month and i have a walk in closet! The dimensions are as 6'5" long and wide but the closet isn’t a complete square and the door opens into the closet. Ill reverse the hinges on the door and that should free up some space. I don’t know yet what the inside looks like, shelves ect. If it does have shelving should I consider a vertical light grow? or just use them for veging? Im looking for maximum yield and would like to eventually play around with clones and breeding. I will be starting from seeds and plan to use soil. This will be my first grow so any advice is very appreciated. I will be moving into an apartment on the top floor so smell noise and such will be an issue. I would like for the majority of it to be DIY but I do have some money to throw at it. Mostly I am just wondering how to maximize yield while either going sea of green or vertical on the lighting.

sounds like you're ready to have some fun. enjoy. the one general piece of advice i'd give is start with one or two plants and learn how they behave throughout the growth cycle. if you try something sophisticated like sog or a vertical grow you're more likely to mess up something basic and have no idea what went wrong.

also, while advanced methods can yield more, do you really need it? your room could fit a 1000 watt light, and easily manage a 600 watt light. assuming you are not trying to sell, that would give you about a pound of bud every 3 to 4 months without any advanced growing techniques.

I have no plans for distribution but i do have a lot of friends who are expecting a hook haha. with a 1000 watt in that closet what kind of ventilation and cooling would I be looking at? Also while I realize sog isn’t practical starting from seeds how much complexity will a vertical grow add? Would it still be a single 1000 watt? If i put in one 600 watt and had a separate veg chamber would my yields be greater than a single 1000 watt and no veging chamber? How likely is a modest perpetual harvest under a 600 watt with a new plant introduced every few weeks?

lots of questions but i'll try my best:

unsolicited advice - friends knowing about your grow is the most frequent way people get caught.

cooling the 600 could be a challenge, cooling the 1000 will definitely be a challenge, and depends on your ability to ventilate well, but people use them all the time. i use a 600 and have had no trouble.

never thought it was worth the trouble for a vertical grow myself, so no advice.

600 watts with a separate veg chamber will give you more yield over time. you can set this up as a perpetual grow (maximum yield) or just change out the harvested plants for the new ones in one step.

Im leaning towards a 600w with a separate veg chamber using floros. I want to be able to clone several strains at once so i will be building two rather large box's for the closet. Being that they will be in an enclosed space and im hoping to handle odor filtration using carbon filters in the exhausts of each box. How should i ventilate inside a closet? Would a small airconditioner with two vents to each box be a good idea, or overkill?

Do you know that more and more apartments have mandatory random fire inspections to catch people like you and the first place they'll look is your closet?

Consider going smaller with what is called a wardrobe cabinet. It is a piece of furniture as big as 6' wide and 2' deep and they cannot look inside it ever. You can get them used, even goodwill.

Trying to keep you safe and out of jail and not evicted...

ORMeds is right...check your lease carefully and see what rights and provisions you have as a tenant. You do have a reasonable expectation of privacy. Also check your state for renters rights before you start your grow. As for lights, I would maybe start out with CFL'S . They're inexpensive to operate and there really is not a heat issue to deal with. I made my own CFL hood/reflectors and have a drip hydro system in a similar size closet (5 feet by 4 feet) for mother plants.

Being as i will be living in Texas my googling shows i really dont have as many rights as other states. thanks ormeds i really had not considered under what circumstances my landlord could enter my place. I have yet to sign the lease so i will look it over carefully before signing anything. Say i still used the closet but built enclosures for both my mother plants and others? This would mean a 600w box and a veg box in that closet, each with their own carbon filter. If i were to put a simple lock on each cabinet would that sidestep the issue of a landlord entering my place? It may be suspicious but at least it wont get me arrested right? I will be using CFL's for my mothers, however i think im already sold on the 600w for my main chamber. Thanks a ton for the advice! I was all about the vertical grow but i would rather have fewer buds and get to smoke them than a lot of plants seized by the po po's

Buy a good locking doorknob and a padlock too. If they come in and are not able to enter the closet tell them you have registered guns, heirlooms, and other valuables under additional lock and key for safety. You are protected under the 4th amendment, and if they insist on searching, kick them out and it is time to move anyway. Good luck.

I know police would not be able to enter the room without a warrent if it was locked. But couldn't the landlord just remove the lock? I didn't think I could deny entry to an entire room.

Put it this way. We just had a mandatory fire inspection in December and I didn't even flinch. If you can dude just rent a condo and you will have more privacy with a landlord instead of "staff" worrying about the premises. As long as you are on top of your game with the noise, odor, and light leakage who would insist on entering the room if it is locked and you are not there? If you are there come to the door naked and say you are railing your old lady and to come back in a hour or so.

Yea I'm feeling more secure it is in a complex that's trying to sell some of the condos I'll be signing a 1 year lease. It's a nice area and I'm on the (top) 3rd floor. If I use the entire closet how would I handle ventilation assuming the inside is sealed. With the lock what other mods will I need to make. The door leads out to my bathroom. So the area is rather tucked away.

First, check to see if there are any unused outlets in the room. You can always take that out, attach a 4 inch duct flange to the wall (Got mine from HTG) and use that as an exhaust port. Intake is somewhat tricky, but what I did is this... Since there was a small A/C vent in the ceiling, I used that as my intake for the ducting, ran it to the air cooled hood, and then to the hole in the wall. Heat issue was solved. I then sealed the doors with foam weather stripping, and a weather flap for the bottom of the door. I got a used CO2 tank and regulator, and I run it just enough for my closet's size(8x8x12). Therefore I don't need an exhaust. I haven't picked it up yet, but a guy an hour away has a used 6 inch carbon filter/scrubber he will part with for $60 and that will solve the odor. With my room sealed there is a little noise coming from the room from the inline fan for the air cooled hood, but it is not even as loud as the A/C when you stand on the outside. Odor, noise, ventilation solved, and a very nice lock and key set from Lowes for security. Boom.
