needin to flower...

hi guys..

i have the following lights, 2 x55w cfl which i used for Veg.

7 or so days ago i switched to 12/12 with a new 400wHPS. this near melted my op. one of my plants may never recover :(

iv since added more ventilation, about as much as i can afford here. any time i go back to try 12/12 with the HPS it starts to melt the things with temps always nearing 90 within 10 minutes. my space doesnt take to the heat created by this lamp.

the plants are now gettin quite big so i have the problem of them outgrowing me very soon, which i think they may hav done already. the larger plant is close to 20" now and its himalayan gold too. so! i need to flower now!

is there anything i can do with the 2x55w cfl's to flower? or must i use sodium? i guess i could try and buy a cool tube? but thats probably more money than i have at the moment. they really dont like the heat of the sodium. theyv flourised underneath the CFL - with temps in the 60's and 70's. so much so i thought a week or so ago they were dead but seems at least one should produce some juicy fruit, and i dont want to miss out on it!

peace!

You can use the CFLs for flowering, the buds just wont be as big and dense as they would be with the HPS. Do you have the ballast inside the grow area, if so move it outside a lot of heat comes off the ballast.

ballast in a separate compartment above - may generate some heat in the box, will experiment with that.

how much cfl would i need in addition to those i have to flower satisfactually?

I don't grow with CFLs so I can't really say how many you will need, but you will want the 2700k spectrum cfls for flowering.

Just use CFLs to flower (I'd get a few more to go with the one's you already have though). Heat will no longer be an issue.

I suggest getting at least 2-3 more of the 55 watt CFLs.

Do you have a hood? Does it have glass? What size exhaust do you have. How close is your light to your plants? How big is your cab?

your lamp looks way to close.
you can cool your lamp by a cooltube or a 6" fan blowing directly onto the bulb/lamp/reflector.
this is a rough guide to lamp heights just remember every situation/growroom/space is different and just use the charts as a rough guide.
one chart is mh lamps and other for hps lamps.

I didn't see that picture before. If I had, I would've said the same thing. The light is way too close. It should be at least 12 inches away from the tops. Put your hand under the light for 60 seconds and if it doesn't make your skin uncomfortably hot... then its good to go.

hey guys thanks. this is the plant back on the cfls - theyr not too hot now, iv always kept them am inch from the cfl.

the hps was as high as i could get it in the end, a good 20 - 30 " from the top shoot. still reaching 95 or so. its just a budget reflector with no air cooling.

its a 5'6" cupboard just a standard wardrobe. active intake and outlet - i experimented, and the temps were cooler in there with active on both. just pc fans on there hooked upto an adaptor. (cool moves i learned from RUI)

have been trying to find more fans everywhere, but theres not much need for them here at the moment so they're scarse.

thanks, will look into cfls. may try and find a cool tube cheap tho. seems a waste to have a 400w hps and not be able to use it coz of the temp :( problem with cool tube is the light coming out of the intake is in a bad position to get spotted, will mean moving my op perhaps
