Need help from HID Experts

So I've read a lot about growing over the past 4 years or so. Even sitting in class I was reading my kindle with the Marijuana Grow Bible on it lol.

Anyways, on to the questions. I feel like I'm in a whirlwind of confusion all of the sudden. The entire time I've been learning I've been planning on a stealth cab using CFLs. Now I'm leaning towards a little bigger grow area with HPS/MH bulbs instead.

I know absolutely nothing about HID though. Could you possibly help a newbie out?

I'm really only wanting to grow one or two plants at a time. I'd rather do one and SCROG it though. From what I've read I'm thinking 150W should be more than enough for what I'm wanting. About how big of an area should I have to grow in?

Also another really important question. I've moved in with my girlfriend and her parents. They are absolutely fine with us smoking marijuana and have even said themselves that if it weren't for their jobs they would be sitting in rotation with us lol. As for the question; Is there anyway that I could find their opinions on growing? I'd like to flat out ask them if I could grow, but if they say no, I don't want to do it anyway and disrespect their wishes like that. If I don't ask, I have to go smaller and probably use CFLs. If I get permission, chances are I have a whole garage to grow in lol.

Ur living with ur inlaws pretty much so u are indebted to them for the roof over ur head. Give them the respect they deserve. Be a man and explain what u would like to do. If they are down with ur plan then ur good to go. If they aren't u can't grow in their house, period end of story. Either way they'll respect u for asking. As to the lights, 150w HID will give u a footprint of about 2x2. That's one plant. Yield about 1 zip of fluffy bud under optimum conditions. Think about 400w. You'll get an extra zip and the nuggies will be a little denser. HID requires a ballast and u generally buy the cord set, hood, bulbs and ballast as a package. You might spend $150 for the set. My advice is to think about a soil grow because it's easier and when ur ready I'll help u with ur soil mix. Now go have that conversation with the in-laws and get it over with

Ask first like previously stated. Questions arise when they notice more bud smoked and even the lights going up.. plus what if they hear your fans or ballast? Id rather ask then have to grow in the woods where my new home would be.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think what I'm going to do is just work for a month or two (get some money for setup) and then I'll pop the question. That way they know that I'm not some lazy stoner that's gonna throw his life away. I'll show my work ethic and hopefully that will persuade them a little bit.
