Need advice, first time growing.

Can i please have some feed back on what i am doing wrong.

I had 5 plants start from Seedlings to small plants, And for awhile things were good.

But it seems i've hit a snag and i dont know enough to analyze what the problem could be.

Here's what i'm trying to grow and what conditions there under.

Growning White Widow x 3 and 1 x DNA
(Did have 4 WW but 1 has alrdy died)

Its a cuboard grow room.

Under a 600w Hight sodium light which is just over 30cm away from the tops of the plants.

I'm using a Hyroponics system for watering which clicks on every 2 days for less then 2 minutes. As to not over Feed them, the cubes i'm using hold alot of water and i hear that they can still be Super wet on the underside and SUper dry on the tops.

Using Carbonated water in a Spray bottle should they get to dry, Ph at 5.4

The growing medium is Rockwool cubes, I allow for them to get wet on feeding days then moist on days after.

Inside Temp stays between 27c and 30c above ground and 25c below.

On the nights its 20c above ground and 25c below.

There is 2 Pc Fans supplying Fresh air from an outside window during the day times.

The light cycle is 12/12.

Using Ionic Boost/Grow/bloom as Nutrient solution for HW,

PH is between 5.4 and 6.2

Got an Air Block in the Hyro to keep the water Oxidised for the plants.

I'll show you what i've got after 3 weeks of growing. And if you can offer anything in the way of advice i'll be more then welcoming of it.

Is this a flood and drain system? If so, you should flood and drain twice per day for 15 minutes each time. Rockwool cubes do hold water well but going 24 hours without a watering has a visual affect on your plants.

EDIT: I just clicked on your pics. You should be watering one time per day at this stage and back off on your nutes. You're burning the little guys. I'm not familiar with your nutes but following the recommended schedule at this stage should suffice.

Hm I belive in what your saying, maybe i could increase the feeding cycle.

Would you say that once a day would be enough at this early stage?
Or would you reconmend twice daily?

Out of the 4 that are alive 1 seems to be doing really well, so i guess it was the strength in this one that made me belive that what i was doing must be Right if this one can live off it.

I'll change the cycle slowly as i dont want to shock them.

Well, the nutrient mixture should be as recommended by the brand that you're using and coincide with the stage of the plant. If by 'feeding', you mean flooding, then yes, I would flood at least 1 time per day for 15 minutes. It shouldn't really take more than a week to 10 days befor these ladies will need flooded 2 times per day. It's really a judgement call as to the visual health and needs of your plants. I wouldn't worry about 'shocking' the plant by flooding more often. They'll appriciate the water and should look visually better in the next few days.

How big are those cubes? I use 6x6x6 and my 2 flood per day advice is based on the size i use. If yours are smaller, be open to flooding 3 times per day when the plants are big enough to need that.

I've followed the dircetions on the back of the Nuti and it clearly says what lvls of feed you should be giving at this stage of the plants development, so i'm fairly... Okay on that part i think lol

Your pics aren't the best quality but it sort of looks like the the plants are being burned. But yes, I'd say 1 watering every 24 hours at this stage. After a week or so, water every 12 hours. I'd recommend changing your reservoir every week and in the event that you're currently burning your girls, just dilute your reservoir with a few gallons of water.

Hydro plants are quick to recover from problems like this so just remember your mistakes along the way. You'll be an expert in no time.

Those plants are definately being burnt. It's all around the edges of your leaves. Use distilled water for another 2 weeks, you still have some time before you add your nutes. You should be ready to start vegging in about another week, week and a half. You don't want to start adding nutes until you are in your second week of veg, and it's only like at quarter strength at that point.

600watt hps one foot away from the plants are waaaaay too close to the plants.. try more like 2.5-3ft away

Right so to summerise.

Increase watering (Use Distilled water only)
Lower Nuti lvl (Dilute mixure or Replace)
Move light higher up (2/3ft)


I How long do you think it'll be before i see any changes in what i'm doing? I dont want to lose any more plants, but on the same note i want to get this right.

how big is your area (sq ft)? make sure you have 50 watts per square foot (WPSF) of High Intensity Discharge (ex: HPS or MH). if your plants are just seedlings dont be using nutrients yet, and you might want to just start over. from placing your light so close it caused a lot of stress to the plants.. just start over with some healthy babies however, it is likely that you'll be making more mistakes with the process of learning how to grow FIRST HAND and maybe you want to just use the plants you have now as an experiment and see how you do, then use all of your learned skills with the second grow.

idk tho from your three pics, which dont provide much, it seems like you're doing okay. but the tin foil is usually a big no no. tin foil can burn spots in your plants.. just paint the wall white (if it isn't) and it will be better for the plant than tin foil.

Yeah the size of my grow room/cub board is 3ftx4ft and about 8ft high.

Its Opens out ward towards a window which i nomally keep open during the light hours to help keep the grow room cool. Like i said the temp in there Never gets higher then 30c its always between 27c and 29/30c.

I could use a lower light if you think the 600w is far to much?

But since yesterday i've cleaned out my hydro with Clean water (ph at 5.4) and Moved the light about 3ft away,

I've not put any nuti in the hydro just clean water at the right ph, and will be watering them for 15 minutes from today onwards.

Do you think with these changes i should be okay? Or alteast have a better chance.

I've started to germ 3 more seeds as i think out of the 4 i'll more then likey lose 3, which is sad but i think your super right its going to be a learning curve.

I'll try and get sum more pic's up (better ones)

And the Tin foil has gone.

For reflection you might consider going out and buying some Mylar sheeting. you might also want to place rooting cubes under florescent lighting while they establish roots before using High Intensity Discharge lighting. And when you switch wait and watch for about 5-10 minutes before leaving them.
and make sure before you transplant that the seedling has grown enough roots.

...I seem to find this site is tedious to navigate-I like dailybuds.com for an easy access site with great knowledge in an EASY format-do you go there too?

Er I don't use that site, but maybe it can be of some use and i'll be a fool not to check it out.

But so far this site is easy enough to use, if at anytime i have a question its normaly always answered in the first day.


Well i'm starting over again Got 3 new seedlings germinating as we speak, I've saved the strong plant i had left and am just focusing on conducting my experiments Mahahaha!!

But i do have a question.

When you guys say flush it out?
I take it as in Flush the plant out with Clean, sterilized water? It sounds like your resetting the plant on a different nuti cycle which i think is summit i need.


But so far the advice i've recived has been well good, please keep it coming
