alright, so let me give you a quick run-down.
i started growing a plant with a desk lamp powered fluorescent light. i thought this might work, as to keeping the plant small: i had the light on a side of the plant, and rotated the plant daily. thus, the plant would grow back and forth towards the light rather than grow up. anyway, i just got a new light. it's a specific grow light, and it almost look like a black light. the light it puts out is sorta purple. and i just started using that this week. my plant is about 3 weeks old, has a few sets of leaves and is only like 4 inches tall...
and just recently, the small round-ish leaves that are halfway down the stem (the ones that are there from the start) started to turn yellow and wilt. every other leaf is green and healthy, i believe. what is the problem here? or is it supposed to happen?

not to be mean or anything but if you had spent a little time reading from here then you would know that the "small roundish leaves" are called cotyledons and they often fall off once there are larger leaves to replace them... if you are complaining about plant growth look around there is more information than you will ever need even if you made this your profession. READ so we dont have to WRITE more than we need too.

I don't have time to look through a bunch of posts just for this, I was just curious. But thank you, I was hoping that was the answer. I googled it but I couldn't find anything about those leaves in particular. Thanks for your help.

Heey specific posts like these are awesome!! It brings out most of the beginner problems and when newbies get a chance to look at this they learn something new! just like how i just learned about cotyledons and them falling off from informative ppl like you :D

Some people are not in the Eclipse/Solstice mood. I don't understand the light change, but I'd try and get like a 42W (=150) CFL and put it in your lamp. Check the label and make sure it takes at least what you're putting in. Don't use a black-light type thing. Also, make sure you got a fan blowing on her 24/7 so she's always wavering. And last but not least, FEED HER. (I'd say it's an airflow problem, personally.) Good luck.

PS Before I get reamed, that big plant next to the little one is a male I wanted to get a little pollen from. He was not growing there :) and is now out in an unusual CA storm!

thanks guys! also, what about the original leaves? not the coyledons, but the bigger ones that sprouted right after those. mine seem a little droopy and almost look dead, but i'm not quite sure what to think about it. every other leaf is perfectly fine, and the 5'th fingers of the leaves are starting to come out. is this just normal too?

only water once the soil dries out and you need to start feeding. its probably a watering problem or nitrogen deficiency. those are really the main issues at this stage in the game. but since i have no idea what youve done to that plant because youve neglected to look at anything on this site before jumping into your grow, its hard to say much more

sorry, but you're a jackass. thanks for the help, i guess, but quit replying; i don't get why you have some personal issue with me not reading every damn post on the site.

Ok, first off, a picture would help greatly... LOL, but I want to know about your light... do you know if it is 2700K or 6500K? Do yourself a favor and stay away from colored bulbs because they don't put out the light spectrum needed for growing... Go to Wal-mart (assuming that there is one around) and find yourself a Lights of America 60W 6500K Daylight CFL for about $.92 thats right cents...(comes in a light blue box with green at the top)... since you are using a desk lamp, you need a light that has 6500K (temperature of light color in Kelvin) esp for vegetative growth. These bulbs fit into any regular light socket... and they are bright as fuck but don't put off to much heat, so you can put them up close and personal, just what your little guy needs. Also, what type of medium are you using? and if soil, what kind? It is really helpful to take a few minutes to read through here, esp b4 starting a grow, so you can at least have a little bit better of an idea... but as in your case, take the time now to correct anything you might have wrong... Hope your baby is doing ok... Merry Christmas

alright, well now i'm not using the desk lamp. I got a "grow light" from walmart for 10 dollars. i mean i read up on this before starting, but i'm not a professional grower or anything. i didn't know to check the type of soil (10/10/10 maybe) before throwing it away, now i know that was a mistake. i'm also using superthrive in the water; i hear it does miracles.

Those walmart grow lights are great for seedlings... You can put them super up close! Same ones I used, but for veg, you want more light in there... 6500K... Im telling you, those CFL bulbs mentioned above are cheap and VERY EFFECTIVE... in two days using those, my tiny ass ugly leaves grew 3 times what they were... What type of soil are you using???

p.s... Merry Christmas

So, i should probably buy some new ones, i'd say. they are starting to sprout their 5'th leaves. how much do these lights cost? and how should i place them? my biggest problem with placement, is figuring out how to plug them in at that angle/position. can i have some tips? I was thinking i might get 2 of the CFL bulbs and hang them from a rectangular box (tall wise) and then get like 3 more of those bar lights i had and place those vertical on the walls of the box. good idea or no? thanks for the help. merry christmas (late) to you too!

Those 60W I told u about are $.92 (cents) a piece! Cheep and awesome! Walmart dude... Here's what I did to hang them, and with you having the box, this will work for you too... I went to home depot (conveniently attached to my walmart) and got 3 Leviton twin socket lamp holder adapters (2.69 each)

and 3 Leviton outlet to socket light plugs (2.29 each)... I took a 6 outlet power strip (phillips power surge from walmart $5.97) and spaced out and then hung... mine is attached to an upside down chafing dish tray attached to my ceiling, but you can grab some zip ties and easily strap it to the top of your box...

Worked for me... and has doubled my plants growth in the past 2 days... Hope this helps
