My lost genetics, Cleaning up the seed collection

i am on a mission to determine what seeds in my collection are viable. i have some seeds that are over 5 years old and i want to clean my seed collection.

dumb ass me is doing this at the same time i have recently purchased a dozen new packs o_O

what that means is if i find something viable (which i have doubts on some) i will have to squeeze it into my lineup somewhere, lol.

with a very busy year planned, this should be difficult, lol....

it started with trying to pop 1 seed of each of the following 3 weeks ago
Sativa Seed Bank - Eldorado
Crazy X Seeds - Colombian X
Nirvana - Maui Wowie

after 2 weeks none had germed, so i threw the rest of the remaining packs into paper towels.

i am 1 week away from announcing these 3 strains no longer part of my collection

unfortunately, through life's up and downs never got a chance to run some of these.

next on the list for viability testing (gonna drop 1 seed of each again, today)

Spice of Life - Blue Satellite 2.0
Ed Wood - Chronic F2's
Ingemar - Chrystal Tsunami

i expect to lose/remove about 25% of my collection:wall:

I have good success when older seeds are soaked in water that has triacontanol included. I have seen seeds several years old sprout as if they was a fresh set. It also can help if u expose the seeds to chilly weather before you soak them. Like over night in the veg section of your refrigerator prior to beginning your germination process

thanks will look into that

Might I suggest you "take some time off" to refresh your genetics yourself? Isolate cloned males for pollen collection. They can be kept under cheap really low watt cfl lighting. Use a paint brush to dab pollen on only selected nugs of your females that are 3 weeks into bloom.
you might suggest that, but it would be too late. i always keep my best males and spread the love.

i currently have viable Sour D and Blue Moonshine pollen. About to spray a female bogglegum in the near future with STS.

seed making & strain creating is part my program bongsmilie:bigjoint:

I have seeds i made in the mid 90's that pop pretty quick, take a look at how your seeds are stored if there not good after 5 yrs. For the old ones that are hard i find to cycle them to almost dry then wet again, i do this in a paper towel, usually keep them wet and whatever pops then start cycling the hard ones, if they go they go right after a dry cycle when moistened. To see if you have viable seeds, sacrifice one and bite it in half, if its a brite white embrio it probably had a good chance to grow. Good luck

i had good intentions with the older seeds i am checking, but for various different reasons these never made it into the rotation.

space is not the restraint i once had. can play with different strains/tents/sexes/etc, now
Heck yeah. Awesome. Maybe you could connect with another grower thats willing to be a tester for you. Just so some of your work doesn't expire

viability is excellent for 3 years or so, then it drops a little..If they were properly stored 5 or 6 years later u should get around 70% viability. Ive cracked beans that were over 10 years old.. If you tried a few times with a few beans and they didnt crack, i'd say fuck it, and toss a handfull onto a paper towel. You'll get a better idea of germ rates that way anyway.. if they dont show signs of splitting after 36-48 hours, u can help them along, by Carefully scoring the outside, along the line that a seed would normally split.. use a a razor and be careful. and replace them back into the paper towel..

i will get them cold & score them to try for more success.

storage is not perfect, but ok. kept in cool, dark drawer, all air proof. i have seeds from 2003 that are still viable and will pop.

some of these i bought 5 years ago may have sat on the shelf, especially some freebies that were found (NOS). who knows what storage techniques were used before i obtained them.

yeah right on man..nobody's storage is perfect; we try to keep them as best we can, ya know? . But old beans will germ.. its just a question of what percentage will germ.. In 1998, i cracked stock from 1992. in 2001 i cracked stock from 1996... in 2014 i cracked stock from 2001-2004. and in 2015, i cracked beans from 2002. btw, silica packets work great (for storing w/ seeds and pollen too)..At family x-mas, i collect the silica packets from the toys and stuff, i tell people its for storing computer parts, lol..

Must be a nice pheno of bogglegum if you’re planning to do some S1’s of it.
i like making seeds. i have several different bogglegums going at the moment, the best will be preserved.

if i find something better in my remaining seeds later, i will do S1's again.

like i said earlier, i got room and without a wife or kids for the first time in a while. throwing up an extra tent and hps is no problem. i got spares of both. generally keep a breeding tent running these days too.

with all that said, i am looking for a killer grape bubblegum phenotype from the bogglegum. had that pheno back in the earlier 2000's, but that is lone gone. hope to find her again. want to breed her to my ghost train haze and a few others.

i has a nice pheno of Bogbubble last year that was sweet bubblegum turning slight grape. I’m ordering bogglegum to run outdoors this year. I wonder how the current bogglegum is compared to a few years back.

Keep your valued seeds inside a dark fridge in glass jars with desiccant packets from now on.

Line a small cylindrical container with fine sandpaper and roll the beans inside to evenly scarify.

Blue Satellite!!
good advice...

and i hear you on the Blue Satellite bongsmilie

i will be able to tell you in the next few months.

i plan on adding some sour bubble to my collection soon, those will get popped for sure
I’m getting some sour bubble and I’m going to do a headbanger x sour bubble cross for myself. I think there would be some nice expressions show up.
