Heres a pic of my grow light setup. Its pretty sick. Its a 1000W HPS. I stuck the mogul on the top of a shortened floor lamp and the ballast inside of an old smoke machine box that I hollowed. The fog machine box is a heat shield for the cap and ignitor and the stand keeps the lamp far away from my plants. Considering I covered most of the area in mylar, I figured a hood isn't extremely necessary... It would be nice, though, I might just use a small sheet of anodized aluminum and screw it up in a quarter pipe way so that it reflects the light from the corner efficiently. all of it cost me under 250.
Also lamps this hot melt mylar and plastic on contact, just turn it off cool it down and scrape it off with a razor blade.
I point a fan at it and it circulates the heat from the top of the cieling very well.
