If I could just pick a spot, that would be rough. There are so many places that could make you say perfect, absolutely perfect ... but if you looked a little longer you would find another that made you say the same thing.
I think in my case the most beautiful place was at Vail. As with all my stories, this one is long. But I will spare you most of it and just give a few details and then skip to the most pertinent part.
Myself, a friend and several hundred people I never saw before, or since, were stuck on the wrong side of the mountain, so to speak. We had gone down the Back Bowls right when a storm was heading up the canyon and power went out.
After finally getting us all to the top of the mountain and then roughly half way down from there to Mid-Vail they had enough power so it wouldn't only be one rider in each gondola as previous to that there was one rider every other chairlift.
So, there was my friend and I, like 16 or maybe 17 years old, and some guy I would guess was in his mid-30's. The storm had passed, the town lights were lit and the sky was overflowing with stars and what I guess was an owl was flying around looking for a snack, this roughly mid-30's guy pulls out a joint.
What had just been a really shitty last several hours or so, suddenly turned out to be really good. We were enclosed, so for a change we were starting to feel slightly warm. We had a great view and since they weren't running at full speed it was a nice slow ride so we could enjoy the view even longer.
If that was not enough, when we got to the bottom workers for Vail met us and gave us passes to ski free the next day and each person was handed a pint of Peppermint Schnapp, even us underage ones.
My day went from being a victim of "Tourist Trap" to being trapped for hours, in the dark, on the wrong side of a mountain making jokes with people which of us would make the larger pile of bear shit, to getting a great buzz at the most needed moment in a great location swinging above the mountain, while looking over the town and area all lit up for Christmas, followed by a free lift ticket and the chance to stumble around Vail drunk, for free, on booze Vail provided me with.
I might be able to top that one if I think really hard, but if so it will be tough. That was a pretty perfect time in several ways.
