Micro Scrog

Hello folks. I have been growing in a small cabinet for nearly a year now (85h x 70w x 60d - centimetres, not inches). LED lighting, growing in soil. Exclusively autoflowering strains to this point, mainly because they don't grow so tall and are slightly less complicated to bring to harvest.

I have some feminised seeds from photoperiod strains, a couple of freebies and also some bought seeds. I was thinking about trying to grow one later in the year. Given the lack of headroom in my cabinet (after taking into account the lights) I'll need some way of keeping the plant short, and I'll have to think about which strain might be best suited.

Was mulling the option of doing a scrog grow, to try and keep the canopy low and away from the lights. I've done a bit of reading on the topic, but most spaces I see using this technique have a bit more headroom.

So my question is really whether this is feasible in such a squat space? I mean I've seen pics of scrog grows in PC cases, but the plants were really tiny. I've got a bit more space than that (about 0.7 square metres) but not much more height.

Also I suppose any tips about pot size, strain choice, etc. I read that for scrog with a single plant it's good to use a fairly big pot, say 20 or 30 litres. However I wonder if using a smaller pot will help to keep the plant stretch more manageable?

My freebie seeds are Peyote Critical and Green Crack. I'll probably try one of these first, as they're single seed packs so no risk of others in the packet going off once opened. From what I've read elsewhere, Green Crack seems more difficult to train as it grows very tall. Maybe Peyote Critical might be a more appropriate choice for this space?

You can scrog a stretchy plant just make sure you time the flip accordingly. It's hard to do with a new strain though if you haven't grown in your own conditions yet to know how it will respond. I started my first real in December. My net is 22inx34in and the plant is about 20in tall it's been a blast growing small but I was at an advantage because I kinda knew what it would do. There are a lot better ones on here I didn't quite get mine filled

That's almost the right scale for my setup, a bit wider but not by much.

You're right that without trying it, difficult to judge. A bit chicken and egg really. I suppose this is the crucial difference with photoperiods - knowing how long to veg.

Did you top that plant, or is that just from tucking and training?

I did top it. I should have thinned it a bit more but I'm still pretty happy with it. If you'd like more pics I'll post them I just didn't want to be inconsiderate. What really threw me off was trimming. Really paying attention to trimming is tough knowing every time you trim two more pop up. I should have trimmed less and flipped a little earlier. Ideally i wanted less tops with the thought process being it would make bigger buds but it turned out ok nevertheless

Ah, good to know. It would be interesting to see your pics if you don't mind. See how you got on at different stages. All part of the learning experience! :)

Because I've only grown autos I have a lot to learn about photo strains...

I'm still pretty green so I may not be the best to learn from but here goes nothing

The entire tent sits on a table but here is a few pics and measurements to show where my lights are. I. Running basically a 2x4 tent with a 2x3 screen out of a concrete mixing tub with a piece of pvc board bolted to the top. I also have another top that holds 15 for a SOG effect

This kinda puts it in perspective
Thanks, really helpful to see these photos against the scale there. You have a bit more headroom but not a huge difference - nearly a foot. @Frank Nitty looking again at your plants some of them don't look so big. So it looks like I may manage in my small space after all. :)

This grow is a way off yet, but plenty of food for thought.

Hell yeah my plants are small and I'm kinda ticked off about it considering that they are the last Forum Stompers that I have...

I like small plants lol I'm into the whole bonsai thing it's relaxing to me
Love your trees Redlig, really like the bonsai approach too, your setup looks great. Just contributing my scrog experience in a really small area if it helps anyone. I grow a single plant in a propogator (52H, 28W, 52L centimetres) keeping it forced down with branches going left and right then alllowed to grow upwards for the stretch. Then comes a small scrog (plastic fence cut out) to get as thick a bud canopy as I possibly can. . Pics show pre scrog, using scrog and post flower.

That's amazing. Truly a micro grow!

Okay, I'm sold on the whole scrog thing... :)
