Medium for germinating? Besides rockwool.

I just got a few fem seeds in, Big Bud, Northern Lights, Jack Herer and some OG Kush. I want to use something besides Rockwool for germinating as I don't like how it holds water in a DWC. I've seen peolle germinate in a little ball of soil or coco I'm not sure which.
Any recommendations?
Also for the medium you recommend please let me know the benefits and if I have to do any ph adjusting or nutrient adding to this medium.

to be fair the medium should not be in contact with the water there should be a layer of hydro clay to stop the media getting to wet

theyre real nice hold enough moisture without being too much
