marijuana stem problem

i was recently trying to grow a sativa strain when the plant got to about 5" the stem went completely limp and then died and i am wanderingwhat i can do to prevent this from happening

Sounds like an issue from another aspect such as over watering caused the roots to root and thus the stem weakened. A fan on the plant helps it to build a stronger stem though and you can use rods to help keep the plant up or bring dirt up to the first set of leaves.

Let me guess. It's indoor, and doesn't have a fan on it?
