Making a transition from T5/CFL to MH/HPS.. Advice? I'm clueless...

The time has come to take my hobby to the next level. Currently I have ONE growing space that I'm looking to divide to separate my seedlings/clones from my flowering plants.

I love my T5s and my CFLs, but I'm running out of outlets and I'd like to invest in a "more powerful" source of light for vegging and flowering my plants and leave the T5s and CFLs for seedlings and clones.

I've looked at some MH/HPS conversion ballasts and I think this might be exactly what I'm looking for. My primary concern is the heat output of the MH/HPS lights because the area I have for growing currently isn't ventilated and aside from a 12 inch fan has no means of cooling.

There's a window in the room, so putting in a window a/c unit seems like the most reasonable way to keep the room cool during hot weather since we already have 3 of these lying around.

The room is small, but separated from the rest of the house and the temps in there flucuate wildy throughout the year (nearing 100 degrees in the summer and freezing in the winter).

Exactly how much heat is generated by these types of lights? If I purchased, say, a 400w conversion ballast, would it be warm enough to heat a 4ft X 8 ft room without any additional sources of heat? Would it be so hot that I'd need an air conditioning unit in the room in the summer?

With the conversion light, I'd use MH for veg and HPS for flowering, or is it the other way around?

Also, the light I'm looking at purchasing says it's pre-wired and ready to install. Do all MH/HPS conversion lights come this way or are there some that require special wiring, etc?

Can I plug one of these into a normal outlet, on a circuit with other appliances or do they need a dedicated circuit?

yes it would probably be enough to heat the room in winter when the lights are on.still need heat for lights off.
as for summer, you stated the room hits 100 so you would need a air conditioner even befor you turned on the lights

you got it but to save a few coins, a HPS will do a fair job for veg as well

they plug into a regular outlet but a 400 will only give enough light for a 3x3 area so if you are planning on using the entire 4x8 space, you will need several. 3 400 watt bulbs will draw about10 amps so you may need more circiuts

Thanks, Mrmadcow. I'm not using the whole 4x8 space, probably only about 4x2, so I think one light will do for now. I guess I can always put a space heater in there for lights out time.
