Lighting Question

Hello everyone,

I have recently purchased some used equipment from people in order to begin growing. In everything I managed to purchase I now have the following:

1 Cool Tube
1 1000W HPS bulb
1 600W HPS bulb
1 400W HPS bulb
1 1000W ballast
1 600W ballast
1 400W ballast

When I purchased it the 1000W bulb and ballast were already set up with the cool tube and it works perfectly fine but produces a lot of heat.

I was wondering can I use the same cool tube with the other ballast and bulb combinations?

The next question is I have two tents, one is 3' wide x 2' deep x 5' tall, the other is 3' wide x 3' deep x 7' tall. How far away from my plants should the lights be when I get things set up?

Yes you can use the cool tube with any of the ballasts as long as the socket and/or plug are the same.

As far as how close you can get the lights, well that depends on how well you cool that cooltube.
You want them as close as you can without burning the tops of the plants.

If you can pick up a good 6"or8" inline fan for the cooltube I would run the 1000w its by far the best one.
But you would need to have good ventilation to keep the heat down, that's the only way I would use it.

I would recommend replacing the bulbs tho. No rush im sure they will work ok for now.

I was planning on using the items I found (a large bulk purchase for a good price) to build the veg tent (smaller one). Once that is done I will be using what is left and purchasing the rest of the equipment needed to build the flowering tent. So thus far I'm only really worried about the veg tent.

On a different note, after I started to test everything I found the 600W bulb and ballast and the 400W bulb and ballast do not seem to work properly. On both of them when I turn them on I get no light at all. After a few minutes or so the bulbs will turn purple around the base of the bulb and then turn back off for a few seconds. A few minutes after that the process repeats. Is this a sign of bad bulbs or ballasts or what?
