Lighting on your plants

How do you know how close your lights need to be on your plants? Is there a certain distance you should always keep your light? :leaf::leaf:

like scott 420 said just put your hand at the top of your plant and check the heat, in my experience(most of which is with 600hps) the distance is around 12" to 18". also its a good idea if you can get a fan blowing towards this space between canopy top and light, it helps keep the heat down a little as well as the normal benefits you get from having a fan on

is it air cooled? no cooling? does it have a glass lens? All of these are factors as well. with a 600W, 12" is generally safe. Air cooled you can get closer. Just remember though, the closer you get to the plants, the less spread you will have. So if you are growing multiple plants, it's better to have it a little farther so the light can hit the tops of more plants rather than just whats in the center..

no less than 10 inches, you will see your top leaves do some abnormal things if they do raise it, but check the heat you should be able to leave your hand where the plants are for a while without being uncomfortable.
