Hi all, this is my first post so i apologise if i have this in the wrong place or have done it wrong!!

I have been given some lights by a friend to help with my lemon skunk grow, the bulb is a phillips 400w hpi but it isnt working so i need to replace it.

Do i have to stick with a phillips hpi or can i get a hps for it?

Thanks in advance!

hpi? never heard of it.

ok, googled it, it's a quartz lamp. Most likely you have to stick with the same type of bulb. I highly doubt a hps lamp will work.. Hopefully somebody with more knowledge about this than myself will post.

An HPI contains Metal Halogen gases by all accounts. They are used in lighting large warehouses/spaces etc. Very similar to MH, you can also select them in different temperature ranges as well. I am not 100% on the application of this with growing so wouldn't like to say, go ahead and fill your boots and buy another.

Here is a link to a Dutch website http://www.ecat.lighting.philips.com/l/hpi-t/lp_cf_dhptihw_eu_fa_nl_lp_prof_atg/cat/nl/#isSearch=false&grp=Lamps&fly=LP_CF_DHPTIHW_EU_FA_NL_LP_PROF_ATG&familyStartIndex=1&productStartIndex=1 (you can also select English if that helps.

Problem I see with it, is that they are only going to produce daylight temperature ranges between 3800-4300kelvin, which is okay for veg but not so good for flowering. If you get a pic of the ballast then it may help, you may find that if it is a phillips then it will power an hps as well. They seem to sell standard HID ballasts, which is whay HPI comes under.

Good luck,

Ok, i went to the local hydroponics shop and they seemed to think it would be fine using a normal HPS bulb with the ballast i have. Im going to try it tonight in the garage so not to blow my house up. Is anyone aware of any potential explosions here?

Well that was alet down. Nothing at all happened. I think it would have been better if it had blown up!!
