"which is the right way to go "

the right way to go is following your heart. I rarely find following your heart has anything to do with money..

you can't compare led to CFL, nor can you compare anything to anything.

I would say neither one, LED's are a study that nobody knows to much about and CFL's are for small buds. HID lights all day, what the hell happened to people why dont they care about HID's anymore?!?

buy one good led light from reputable company. spend $, have piece of mind. if new to growing, dont buy a shitty light because if you have poor results what's to blame, the grower or the light? buy a light with proven results.

real fast, LEDs have better penetration then CFLs, produce less heat and use less power, but cost a "bit" more to start with

P.s
this is talking quality LEDs, if your looking at a cheap Ebay UFO light from China, your better off using the money one a bunch of 2700/6500K CFLs/Y-splits and make a scrog

DIY LEDs might as well be a different technology than commercial (2X as efficient). There are a few that actually build decent commercial lamps but still not as good.

For vegging, CFL, commercial LED or DIY LED. For flowering, 600HPS or DIY LED if you are feeling energetic. Combination of both works great!

^ this is true.

look at the Are 51. using xpg chips, when xm-l2 are out. if you built it right, you can even get better thermal performance = better light output.

also with DIY, you retain the heatsink / fans / drivers.... in a normal panel, they want you to keep buying the "whole package" so they make money on every part you buy ( case , fans, drivers, heatsink, chips, lens.... ). that can't be said for a company like HGL though, as there suppose to just switch out LED clusters when they make new ones.. who knows though as it's never happened yet to see the process, and how much they charge for the clusters..

but also then to buy a panel is far cheaper, and easier then DIY...
