I am kicking myself for falling for this grift.
I was kind of desperate to score some GDP clones in California because my wife needs GDP for migraines. So far GDP is the only strain we have found that reliably helps. We don’t want to pay retail prices for the flowers so I have been growing it myself. I grew maybe a pound in my mom’s backyard and then my mom died in March. We are still in my mom’s house but we will have to vacate in a couple months (probably) because Mom had a reverse mortgage.
The backyard grow is not strictly legal but I am not selling to anyone whatsoever. It’s all for our personal medical use. I probably exceeded the legal limit on plant numbers but none of the neighbors have complained and the police have never hassled me. I tend to grow a large number of small plants, like an outdoor Sea of Green setup.
So I found a website called Legal Green Weed Store. You can Google it or just go to legalgreenweedstore dot com. I’m not going to post the link here.
So I ordered about $350 worth of small clones and paid through Zelle. I was expecting delivery today or tomorrow but I got a call this morning and was told that I would have to pay a $500 “refundable insurance fee” to get the plants delivered.
Well, that set off alarm bells that should have been ringing before I paid for the clones. I should have checked out the website before I ordered or sent money, but I was in kind of a rush because I don’t know when I have to leave this residence and I wanted to take advantage of the seasonal rain that makes plants grow faster.
I did a quick Google search and learned that “refundable insurance fee” is a known scam, particularly targeting cannabis growers and consumers. It has been around at least since 2013.
Anyway, I can’t cancel the $350 payment but at least I didn’t throw good money after bad by falling for the “insurance fee” BS. I reported Legal Green Weed Store to the California Bureau of Cannabis Control, anonymously. I doubt it will do any good but I feel obligated to tip off other growers about this scam.
So caveat emptor. Reap what you sow. Sucker born every minute. If it sounds too good to be true... You know what I mean. Insert your own cautionary platitude here____ .
Peace out.
