Lack of vertical growth + rep

I have four plants of 2 strains that are 4 weeks tomorrow. They are very bushy and growing horizontally, but not so much vertically. They look healthy and have huge roots, but the tallest is only 9 inches. I planned to flower them in another week, but expected them to be twice this height by then. Should I veg them even longer? I'm thinking of putting the lights higher to encourage them to stretch. Thoughts? Thanks in advance and +rep for good ideas.

What kind of medium are you using? what kind of lights? are you feeding nutrients? pics?

It might be the strains themselves. I personally would not stretch them because they will get a little stretchy when you put them into flower. I veg mine for 6 to 8 weeks from seed most of the time. I'd give them a week of 2 see how they do. Don't rush things natures going to do what it do man and sometimes all we can do is wait.

They are not short strains. They are in DWC with T5 HO lights and Humboldt nutes. I don't mind vegging for longer but from what I hear 5 weeks is typical to get plants of 18-24 inches.

Depending on what you're growing(bagseed?), they're going to double or even triple in height after you induce flowering(12/12). Bear in mind that sativas stretch more than indicas.
