Just how badly does it stink?

Hey there, I've got a few rather simple questions. Just how badly does pot smell when its growing? And how bad does it smell when its flowering? And lastly, how bad does it smell when it is curing? I haven't grown anything yet, but I do live in an apartment complex and am trying to decide whether the payoff is worth the risk of detection.

When I say bad smell, I don't mean malodorous, I mean the strength of the smell.

I know of odor control methods, but both my budget and my growspace are limited.

Any help/advise would be appreciated?

hi it can vary from strain to strain and of course the amount of plants your growing .ive grown some really stinky plants and ive allso had plants that dont really smell at all.when i was a teenager i grew in my mothers house (not advised) and got away with it by just MASKING the smell with air freshners etc ,there some great cheap ways of covering the smell up do a search on here .i dont really worry about the smell these days as me n the missis smoke weed in the house every day so it allways smells here lol but if we have to have the in -laws round or something we use shit loads of air freshners and sprays ,although my mother aint daft and she knows the crack she never says anything .
but yeah in ur situation living in an apartment it could get quite risky as the smell when there flowering can get quite intense and ive heard of it even penetrating through walls etc .

As Sativa High said - it can get pretty bad but it does depend a lot on the strain - some are a lot worse than others. Indica's and Indica dominants tend to smell more than Sativas and Sativa dominants as a general rule.

In my last grow of an Indica dominant, the plants starting stinking after about 2-3 weeks vegetative growth and less so during flowering - although that might have been because I had efficient ventilation in place by flowering so noticed it less.

If you're in an apartment and concerned about the smell, you really need to have an efficient ventilation system in your grow area combined with a carbon scrubber - if you can't afford this at the moment my advice would be to not do it - the smell will drive you mad and make you paranoid as hell and the risk probably isn't worth it - save up until you can get the right equipment to grow safely and relatively risk free.

Ah, great link, thanks. So I would assume an odor neutralizing agent would do the job quite nicely? See, all this is complicated by the fact that I can't smell. Don't have a sense of smell, weird eh?

Anyhoo, I should be moving into a house by the end of the summer, so I may be able to start something then.

Hey anytime. I am glad you found what you were looking for. Hope to keep seeing you around the site. Always good to have new members.
Oh I plan to be around for a while I suppose. Also, thank you to everyone else who gave me tips on this issue. Didn't mean to be a dick and not thank you.

And, if I may ask an extremely newbish question, is "nutes" shorthand for nutrients?

pretty much, not at all.

And how bad does it smell when its flowering?
im guessing, a fucking lot.

And lastly, how bad does it smell when it is curing?
curing is done in airtight jars and whatnot. doesn't smell. but i noticed when i cured last season, the smell just POURED out when i would air the jars out a little.

for smell, try these.
GENERAL HYDROPONICS
i haven't bought one, but from a grow video i hear it deodorizes the room. as long as there's a good exchange of outside air and indoor air.

I never really notice the smell much, some days are stinkier than others, but ive got all kinds of odor killers going on so I have never really smelt it, but i have been really interested to see what 25 flowering white strain plants smell like so i may leave the smell prevention off for an hour or so.

as most everyone else has said, the smell, and how bad it smells varies from different types of plants, and also, i have found that diffrent methods can make the smell change a little bit, if you are living in an apartment building, and have no sense of smell, i wouldnt reccomend growing, you said you are moving into a house sometime soon, i would wait for that to come, just keep an eye on stuff, and ask lots of questions. its the best way to learn. use your time before you move, to get all of your grow room supplies, and figure out exactly how you are going to grow.

may there always be a nug in your bowl

Some of mine smell so strongly, I can taste it. Some not so much. But until you know, you're better off planning for it to smell like high heaven, and dealing with it accordingly, to hoping you get one that isn't so bad, and getting caught by the scent.

I have 2 plants in full on flower (gonna harvest tonight) and 3 in veg in the basement right now. My father came and spent the holidays with me and everytime he walked into my house, he would take a deep breath and then look at me and ask me if i had a party last night or something.

He knows I smoke, he doesn't know I grow. But he could smell it. I used fabreze and scented candles to mask right before he came over. I even have activated carbon filters downstairs (that probably need replaced).

I think he just thought I had some and was trying to get me to share.
