Hey everyone i just got my light from htg yesterday and im really wishing that i didnt cheap out on the reflector now. im growing in a closet about 3 feet deep 8'-going down to 5 1/2' tall and about 6 and a half feet wide. prior to this i was vegging under a 4' 2 lamp t5 setup i made myself using a fixture from home depot a piece of ply big pieces of circular ducting metal for a reflector and two hydrofarm 65k HO bulbs i got from a garden shop. So i had some money to get a light and i wanted both types of bulbs so i cheaped on the reflector ive got two oscillating fans going in the closet and a box fan blowing air in through a nearby window but temps on the plants are still around 90-91 degrees F. so i need to cool things down. i was thinking of converting the reflector they gave me. you know the really cheap 4 sided horizontal into a cool tube type reflector. The lights are about 24" above them i would like to lower it a little bit. so if anyones ever done anything like this before with an htg reflector let me know ive seen a few diy cooltube tutorials but usually they just start with a mogul socket im really wishing i got euro hood or something now. idk i guess the first thing i need to find is a good clear tube to fit a 400w. +rep for help thanks RIU:mrgreen::joint:

there is no simple solution. in addition to a cooltube or new hood, which is the easy part, you need ducting, an inline fan and a place to send all the hot air, which is usually the toughest problem. plan it all out on paper before you buy anything to save yourself some pain.

Thanks for the input yeah i know man ive looked into it i should have kept it more in mind when i purchased the light but it was my first HID and i didnt think it would be this much of a problem right now the temperature outside is 90 and ive got mine at 88 in the closet last time i checked i moved one of the fans and put a bucket of cold water and ice behind one of them a poors mans swamp cooler lol. im thinking im going to vent into my attic its already hot as balls up there no insulation its an old victorian like alot of the houses in my area we have talked about getting the supplies and cleaning it out and insulating some time this summer. If that happens i might just have to move everything upstairs which is what id like to do sometime in the future.:joint: im going to try to rig up my own cool tube with the existing reflector i just need to find the right type of glass tube and what do you guys think of this fan to pull air into the attic?

my plants are loving the new light reguardless and im glad i got it im sure this wont be as bad as the temperature starts to drop in the fall. For an intake i could either cut a hole in the side of my closet (but theres some space between the end wall and outside) or cut a hole for an intake in the door and use a damper on the other side so i can close the closet door. right now its closet door wide open all the time. I hang a blanket up to block out a majority of the light making it look better from an outsider point of view lol. i know ive looked walking by lol:eyesmoke:

if you can vent to the attic, you're golden. even though it's already hot up there, it's insulated from the rest of the house and usually has plenty of vents to let the new air out. but very difficult to make an attic into your grow room, even if you insulate, without adding a/c.

also, you're going to want a carbon filter placed near the ceiling in your room at the beginning of the ventilation run: carbon filter->fan->duct->light->duct->exhaust. this isn't the most efficient way to use your fan but it's the best way to get the least smell possible.

thanks man ill give u an update once i get it all done hopefully with some pics. right now when i take pics they look all fucked up because its a cell cam and i have a cheap magnetic ballast that puts weird lines in the photos that i take within around 6 ft of it. i was actually thinking about getting a cmh to lower the heat but id probably still need to run an in and outtake. I think with a 400w in a closet theres no way around that and at least with a cool tube hood id be able to run CO2 in the future if i wanted. So far though the plants havent showed any sign of heat stress and are looking good and ive got the ice trays agoin lol.

i was also thinking that my attic is the highest point in my neighborhood do think ill still have to worry about odor? if i was venting up there flowering probably 3-9 plants at a time. i also need to set something up for a veg/clone/mother section im thinking of constructing something for my t5 fixture i took down for be not being an HO fixture that thing still cranked out some light and was really cool i could have it an 1-2" from the plants i eventually want to get a full mother keeper from HTG with the 4' 4 lamp HO t5 but with my current problems and funds it looks like its going to be a little bit. good news though right now in the room its only 84 F Whoohoo!

shit ive got an old gas mask canister that we used to use to smoke in places we werent supposed too. lol i just looked it up and in the center is activated carbon i bet you it would definatly work for atleast a little while. we use to blow pipe hits through the outlet and nothing would come out on the other side my buddy gave it to me, and i think the intake is 2-4" anyways i just dont know how warn the carbon is.

your fan's fine, your diy carbon filter is kinda risky. even if the carbon's ok, that's not a lot of carbon to absorb a lot of stink.

yeah i wanna make the diy filter out of pencil holders, carbon, and a pantyhose, i tried to get a pyrex bake a round tube on ebay today i lost the auction by 50 cents (wasnt paying attention the last 30 seconds what a dick). It went for $11 plus $11 for shipping still a little expensive but its was the cheapest one. I think ebay sellers have caught on to the demand because they all seem to be going from $20-$50!!!! crazy and i dont even know if it would fit a growbright 400w mh conversion bulb its pretty big. im thinking ill call htg tomorrow and see if maybe they can give me a deal on a 6" cool tube or a euro hood since i just bought the light from them and would have gotten either for $25 cheaper if i didnt get the cheapo hood. What do you thinks better for my situation? i know the euro hoods are pretty big but that may also help me cover more area. im trying to get a temporary veg area setup for my momma and clones im going to clone my best bluecheese alice and flower my other bluecheese azorite and lsd aubrey soon i just been gave azorite and aubrey a nice dose of grow it green and a little flower power while ive just been giving alice super plant tonic to drain the nitrogen and build up the carbs they are all 53 days old and lookin good i plan on cloning alice in a week to week and a half ive read its best to mother a plant after shes two months old from seed even though she looks ready.i also dont know if im going to use my take-root with rockwool cubes or straight seed starter mix? they will probably all be grown in soil im thinking since they are going to be smaller clones i should use rockwool cubes i just have no experience with them but i do have a block of starter grodans and they probably with have a better success rate than the soil ill just use albfucts tutorial i would like to get something perpetual going once i do and get a good camera ill start a journal i cant even take cell pics anymore because i dropped my good phone in the toilet the other day(whole nother post) and im using my cheap backup atm. i dont know if anyone else is reading this but thanks desertrat and lurkers if youve got input please share. peace RIU

Hey deasertrat if you have the time read this link and tell me what you think in regards too my situation...

https://www.gardenscure.com/420/lighting/123450-diy-cool-tube.html

Im thinking ill pick up the grow bright 6" fan and maybe ill DIY a michaels cool tube or maybe not im going to see what there is for a selection tomorrow. but im thinking even if i dont cool tube it i will just pull off the end reflectors so its batwing style and ill setup one of my fans too vent through some ducting setup close to the light venting into the attic im going to use the old coathanger with an electric drill to find a good spot for the vent whole i might even convert the six down to a four inch for the outtake and i plan on putting an intake in the door somehow idk ill keep everyone posted. Is it just me or has RIU gotten smaller lately?

Oh & I had made the DIY filters, I'll have 6 plants and I had 2 of them. A lot of people said that wouldn't do much.
