Hi everyone, my name is Jimmy Oceano Liberacci, loooong time reader, first time poster.
After having grown shrooms many times I finally want to get around to planting some herb! The problem is, the room I'm going to be doing this in isn't exactly on par with some of the stuff you can find on this website.
The list of shortcomings is unfortunately very long. Let's start:
- CO2: Not a chance. The room I'm going to be growing in is the one I live and sleep in, so for health related reasons I can't pump any extra Co2 while I'm there. I have a 2-month old lab puppy and I'll never do anything that could be even remotely bad for his growth/general health.
I've heard Co2 can in some cases even double yields, so it really is a pity, but I'm afraid it's not going to be possible. I work at home (translator) so there's days I spend practically the whole day in there, having too much Co2 in the air would probably make me sleepy and not able to concentrate.
- FANS/AIR EXHAUST/CARBON FILTER: I'm pretty sure none of this will be possible for me to pull off considering the room I'm in. Best I can do would be to open the windows for a while at night, when my neighbours are asleep. The smell could get really bad, I know, but I don't have the possibility to do anything about it, I don't have any windows where I'm going to be growing.
- LIGHTS: OK so I figure if I'm going to fuck everything else up, I might as well get some decent bulbs, right?
I'm going to go for 600W HPS. While I'm at it ... could getting a 1000 watter help reduce the damage from my shitty grow-op? What I mean by damage is the difference between the yield from this grow and a professional state-of-the-art grow like you guys do here.
- LIGHT CYCLE: Again, I am going to be growing in my room so the best I can do is 16/8, with those 8 hours obviously being for sleep. I have no problem putting in all the effort in the world for this grow, but sleeping with a 1000 W bulb right next to your head (my single-room apartment is tiny) is something I just can't do, for (mental) health reasons.
I know 18/6 would be better for some strains but I just can't go 2 months with 6 hours of sleep a day. My mother's a doctor and she told me years ago that sleeping with the lights on is bad for your eyesight, you can get used to sleeping with light in the room but it'll be bad for your eyes in the long run.
- NUTRIENTS: This is pretty much the same as with the lights: Everything else is going to be subpar so I sure as hell am not going to try to save money on this, I'm going to get the very best I can get for this particular strain, no matter what the cost.
- POTS: From what I've read, the bigger the better so I'm going to go for 5L pots just to be sure. Could I benefit seriously from bigger pots with the type of grow I'm going for? I'm saying this because, as opposed to most other factors, this is one I don't care to change - having 10L pots isn't really more of a nuisance than 5L pots, it doesn't bother me at all, so if you guys think this could save my grow I'll get bigger pots and additional growth medium, no problems!
- GROWTH MEDIUM: For now, just good old soil from a store near my house. Do any of you have the idea that for a ghetto-grow like this something else is more recommendable? This is one of the things I can change easily. I can't have air exhaust, Co2 etc etc but I'll get whatever soil medium you experts recommend me, it's no extra hassle at all! Maybe some coco or something of that sort?
And finally...
What strain? Hash plant. Why? Because I like myself a good ol' Indica. I'm a lazy guy, I like relaxing weed. Supposedly easy to grow (remember, this is my first grow!), decent yields, nice indica stone, a little faster to grow than most other strains. The fact that they supposedly don't grow all too high is definetly an advantage too.
Actually, let me tell you the truth: I'm a huge fan of Northern Farmer's stadium grow. (That is in fact how I found this message board). I figure, I sure as hell can't pull anything as spectacular off as he did in that thread, so I try to comfort myself planting the same strain
Hash Plant supposedly doesn't have much bag appeal but that doesn't matter since I'm not looking to sell, I'm looking to save money because I have been spending way too much on weed these last years and I'm hoping this grow, crappy as it may be, will help me save some cash.
So friends, how bad does it look for me?
I know I sure as hell shouldn't be expecting those massive yields you guys are getting. It's too bad. As I said in the title, it's not that I'm lazy, I'd be willing to put in all the effort into this. And I'd be willing to invest as much money as necessary (well, to a certain extent, obviously...) but I just can't have Co2, I'm afraid I'm not going to have an exhaust, etc. As for the fan ... could having just a normal fan on in front of the plants for 24 hours a day help? I've never really understood what the point of that is, I understand why to keep exchanging the air from your room but some people seem to just have normal floor-fans pointing at their plants and I don't quite understand that.
The temperature should be pretty normal, around 20º Celsius and so, rising from a couple of months on. I'm in Spain, believe me, it gets hot in here. The worst day of the year in Los Angeles is an average day for us in Spain. My apartment has shitty insulation so it gets seriously hot from late May/June all the way to mid-September. I'm talking about maybe 35º Celsius (94F) at 4 in the morning. Luckily I have a small movable AC unit to prevent my plants from dying. The rest of the time I believe my temperature will be OK, one of the few things that are going to OK about my grow.
Now, the final data you'd all need is to know how many plants I'm going to go for, but unfortunately, I don't even know this myself: What I can tell you is that I'm going to buy 10 Hash Plant seeds. This is my first grow, so Lord only knows how many plants that's going to mean. Is getting feminised seeds worth the extra cash? So let's just say the ganja Gods are smiling at me and I get 8 plants from these 10 feminised seeds, how much of a yield should I expect? What if I only end up getting a measly 5 plants? What yield am I looking at here guys?
And the last question (sorry, I know this is really long, I'll really appreciate anyone who takes the time to read through all of this) is whether I should expect this sort of grow to have a negative effect on the quality as well. I have no doubt that the quantity from my grow will be much worse than a similar 5/8 Hash Plant grow with the kick-ass setups you guys use, but what I'm wondering if I'll have to suffer through worse quality (THC percentage, overall balance of it, THC-CBD relations, etc) as well for my ridiculous grow room?
My idea for now is to make a very crappy Omega Garden type thing, that is, 5 plants in star formation with the light hanging in the middle. I'd rotate the pots every 12 hours or so, it's not a big effort to rotate 5 pots. If I have more than 5 (which would sure be nice, but I'm afraid I'm not going to get that lucky) I'd try some other formation, but always with the bulb hanging in the middle, between my ladies.

In a sad attempt to increase my total output, I'm going to get some bubble bags to make some fresh hash. I'm bored with smoking commercial Morrocan hash, I'd love some fresh stuff.
How much should total leaf material should I normally expect from 5 or 8 plants in a grow like this?
From what I heard I should expect a 15-1 ratio with leaves, so how many grams of hash could I end up with?
