well the hps is a one time initial investment, which usually pays for it's self after the first harvest....i can't really defend cfls. besides we don't all have the beautiful cali sun.
oh well yes, down with clf's.who said anything about sun? this is the indoor section.
i see these people all day begging to learn how to grow plants with CFL's. i don't get it. like you said HPS pays for itself first harvest. unless you are growing in a cupboard or small box then stop buying those poisonous things.
oh way cool, ima have to go pick me up some of these
Well I will bite. I use them for veg because I don't want the extra heat involved with mh. I use no ventilation for veg and I am able to spread my light out over a pretty wide area. I feel I would need two 250's to do what I did with 216 watts not to mention the cost savings in forced ventilation. I am not growing many plants but I grew with 216 watts of cfl in custom made reflectors and they did just fine. They grew nice and bushy with zero stretching. Now I am not saying cfl's are better than mh for veg but I also can purchase cfl's at allot of local shops where I would have to order mh bulbs. I don't know how much money I would have saved over mh or hps but I amhappy with the results. I also am very careful with bulbs so I don't worry about the mercury. I guess I am not an environmentalist since all my vehicles are gas guzzling v8's.
However since the penetration is minimal on cfl's and placing them all around my plants in flower would be a nightmare and time consuming to move. So I run an hps for flower. I only burn an ounce a month so this setup works very well for me. I will most likely continue to grow this way until I move down to cali with you fdd.

what's wrong with four foot fluorescents?
i also have ZERO ventilation but i still use and MH light for veg. just get a couple of fans to keep things realitively cool. temps in my room are always about 80 but my plants never seem to mind.Well I will bite. What is to learn. Hook them up and grow. To the best of my knowledge the supposed best veg lights contain mercury as well. I think the popularity boils down to availability.

what to learn? i see people ALL day asking about lumens and how many and how far away and side-ways and reflectors and how many and lumens and wattage and fixtures. i use an enhanced spectrum HPS. i don't know too many people who even use MH. i use floro's for veg. 4 three footers. lights up a 2' X 3' area with 120 actual watts. i have 15 plants vegging under it. do that with 120 watts of CFL's.

... oh yea I use CFLs for veg... they work alright for small amounts of plants... like 8... or about 25 clones.
