if you grow your own how much money per year do you save?

how much is a small HPS with hood and fan?

why do people insist on growing with CFL's?

do you know they are full of mercury?

why?

why?

why?

well the hps is a one time initial investment, which usually pays for it's self after the first harvest....i can't really defend cfls. besides we don't all have the beautiful cali sun.

who said anything about sun? this is the indoor section.

i see these people all day begging to learn how to grow plants with CFL's. i don't get it. like you said HPS pays for itself first harvest. unless you are growing in a cupboard or small box then stop buying those poisonous things.

Well I will bite. I use them for veg because I don't want the extra heat involved with mh. I use no ventilation for veg and I am able to spread my light out over a pretty wide area. I feel I would need two 250's to do what I did with 216 watts not to mention the cost savings in forced ventilation. I am not growing many plants but I grew with 216 watts of cfl in custom made reflectors and they did just fine. They grew nice and bushy with zero stretching. Now I am not saying cfl's are better than mh for veg but I also can purchase cfl's at allot of local shops where I would have to order mh bulbs. I don't know how much money I would have saved over mh or hps but I amhappy with the results. I also am very careful with bulbs so I don't worry about the mercury. I guess I am not an environmentalist since all my vehicles are gas guzzling v8's.

However since the penetration is minimal on cfl's and placing them all around my plants in flower would be a nightmare and time consuming to move. So I run an hps for flower. I only burn an ounce a month so this setup works very well for me. I will most likely continue to grow this way until I move down to cali with you fdd.:peace::blsmoke::mrgreen:

What is to learn. Hook them up and grow. To the best of my knowledge the supposed best veg lights contain mercury as well. I think the popularity boils down to availability.

I might actually switch to one of the high output units when I get my own place. I liked the idea of being able to move my fixtures independently due to different growth rates. But the four footers seem to work well. Do they contain the same stuff as cfl's?

i also have ZERO ventilation but i still use and MH light for veg. just get a couple of fans to keep things realitively cool. temps in my room are always about 80 but my plants never seem to mind.

what to learn? i see people ALL day asking about lumens and how many and how far away and side-ways and reflectors and how many and lumens and wattage and fixtures. i use an enhanced spectrum HPS. i don't know too many people who even use MH. i use floro's for veg. 4 three footers. lights up a 2' X 3' area with 120 actual watts. i have 15 plants vegging under it. do that with 120 watts of CFL's.:peace:

all florescent lights have murcury vapor... and a 5 foot floro has one drop of murcuray added and then vaporized... CFLs have like 5 mg... or some shit... so... FDD... and your 5 foot floros... bastard!... thats alot of murcury...
but yea CFLs suck... I know firsthand :)... wait :(

I hear mh's are cooler than hps. Are they that much cooler? I was worried about going over 80. In summer the room was near 80 with zero equipment running. I live in Alaska and the common thing to do hear is to build the housing over the garage because it is more efficient in winter. Trouble is in summer it still hits 90 and when the furnace is kicking on to heat water it fucking boils the upstairs. That makes it hell to keep the environment right in the grow room. It really just boiled down to availability for me guys.

... oh yea I use CFLs for veg... they work alright for small amounts of plants... like 8... or about 25 clones.

All one has to do is read the first two posts in a cfl thread to learn how to grow with them all the other shit is just nitpicking. My 216 watts covered 2.5x6.5 feet and my pots were much bigger. My plants were far bushier than the ones in those pics. I am still fine tuning my growing for the space I am given. When I get my own place the fine tuning will start all over.

Yeah I grow four at a time right now. Might do more when I get my place. With decent yields and cloning so I have all females that is plenty for me. I am just a wittle bitty grower:joint:
